Germany’s Chancellor Merz: Why all of this? What is, so to speak, the overarching idea? What is the story behind it? What is the purpose of these reforms? Well, ladies and gentlemen, perhaps that is the answer we have failed to provide more than any other. I do not exclude myself from that criticism. We will have to provide an answer — especially to the younger generation in Germany. We have to give the younger generation a convincing answer as to what our country stands for and where our society is supposed to be heading.
