When Europeans arrived around 500 years ago, maybe five or six million Indians lived in North America (modern US and Canada). They had no horses, so they could not follow the buffaloes. They got horses from the Spanish. Most of the land was empty. US and Canada together have about 7.7 million square miles, so there was about one person per square mile when Europeans arrived.
