I’ll add some context to my earlier tweet because I’m still mentally recovering from everything that happened. We were southwest of Kankakee, Illinois and we turned north to go down a dirt road with a bunch of chasers, and once we turned down that road everyone started turning around. I assumed everyone was turning around because of the wall cloud/tornado crossing it, well I was wrong. I couple people turned around and very large hail started hitting the road, so we use a persons driveway to turn around and once we got turned around, a big chunk of hail hit my passenger window (because I’m not the driver), presumably baseball sized hail or larger and nearly shattered the window, but thankfully it was soft enough that it didn’t. We went back east and north on the highway to get another view of the tornado and it goes into full multi-vortex like 30 yards in front of us as hail starts hitting the vehicle, so we turn back around to find a vehicle (I don’t wanna call them out directly) was parked in the middle of the road and was blocking it. That chaser moved and we went south to find more cars on the shoulder on the left side of the road and another car stopped in the southbound lanes and they were panicking and they were blocking us from going south. Thankfully they moved and we were able to get south. Around this time, we start getting text messages that my grandparents who live in Yukon were hearing tornado sirens and we’re getting into shelter. So once we got south of the supercell and were repositioning, I was looking at this while driving and directing my mom because I was trying to figure out what was going on. We were going north on a highway and accidentally missed the road to turn right because my mom didn’t see it and I wasn’t paying attention. So she is forced to make a very sharp right turn on a road that curves, and since we chase in a 13,000 pound Chevy dually 1 ton, we can’t exactly turn on a dime. She tries to turn once and can’t make it so she backs up, she then goes forward again thinking she can make it and she can’t, so she has to back up again. In the midst of this, 3 chasers including Connor Croff were behind us and we were getting honked at. I got told that over stream Connor was bad mouthing us, got mad at us, and said that we almost caused a 3 car pile up simply because we stopped at a stop sign, cleared it, then tried to make a sharp right turn but couldn’t make it all the way, and this made me and my mom very mad once we learned this because we didn’t almost cause a 3 car pile up. If we almost did, they shouldn’t have been driving that close to us and should’ve been giving us space. After this, we continued east and eventually ended up ahead of the supercell as it was producing a wedge tornado. We began driving north towards it and my mom told me there was a semi truck coming up beside us and I asked her to turn our CB Radio on and see if I could get into contact with that driver and get him to stop. In the act of doing all of this, I lost complete situational awareness and ended up putting us in a terrible position. I was able to get into contact with the driver who passed us on the left and managed to get him to stop. Once I got him to stop I looked back at radar to see that we were in the path of the tornado so we turned back south. As we were turning south the tornado was crossing the highway and winds increased significantly. Visibility was bad and we got hit by the tornado. We got hit by a satellite or a vortex on the south side of the tornado and almost blew us off of the road. By losing situational awareness, it got us into a terrible situation, and had we not been in our chase vehicle, Black Betty, that could’ve been a lot worse, but it takes a lot to move this truck, let alone roll it. We’re alright, I’m alright. The truck is alright and didn’t sustain any damage from that tornado, but I’m going to be taking a huge step back and reevaluating the way I chase. Thank god we’re alright.

26 years ago today, the May 3, 1999 #tornado outbreak happened, including the strongest tornado in History - the Bridge Creek to Moore to OKC F5. I was a freshman meteorology student at the University of Oklahoma, and we had just finished our calculus exam when we piled in the soft top Geo Tracker, driven by Matt Sannes. We blasted down I44 to target the dry line down near Altus, but ran into a lead renegade supercell that formed off a horizontal convective roll near Lawton. The storm looked like a nuclear explosion with news choppers flying all around it. Minutes later we intercepted a white elephant trunk outside of Cyril. Two tornadoes later with this cyclic #tornado producer, the F5 planted with the Doppler on Wheels nearby scanning winds in the vortex. They would measure a 300+ mph wind gust in the tornado near peak intensity. We briefly became disoriented in a forested area near Bridge Creek, and someone (possibly me) had the bright idea to abandon the Geo Tracker to take shelter beneath the overpass. Families were already sheltering there as the F5 slid by the overpass, sending RFD through the gap. We then saw the dark side this #tornado left behind in Moore, OK with total devastation. Horses wandering on the highway and people emerging from the rubble. This was a terrible day for many Oklahomans. A total of 74 tornadoes happened during the May 3, 1999 outbreak including 46 fatalities and $1.5 billion in damage

What's a "wedge" tornado? And how rare are "megawedge" tornadoes? There is no technical definition of a "wedge." Storm chasers consider wedge tornadoes to tornadoes that appear wider than they are tall. (For the tornado's height, they use the distance from the ground to the cloud base – AKA the "lifting condensation level". True tornado circulations extend up to 30,000 or 40,000 feet into the storm, so no tornadoes are *actually* wider than they are tall. We just can only see the part of the tornado that hangs down from the cloud base.) The tornado you see below occurred in Harlan, Iowa on April 26, 2024. It's the biggest I have ever seen. It was 1.1 miles wide, and had winds estimated by mobile Doppler radar up to 224 mph! Only 1 or 2 in 1,000 tornadoes grows larger than a mile wide – at least according to National Weather Service survey data. Realistically, that number might be significantly higher when counting inflow winds and ill-defined edges of the tornadic circulation, especially in rain-wrapped environments. (Where does the "tornado" end and the wind "around" the tornado begin?) MEGAWEDGE tornadoes are informally considered anything wider than 1.5 miles in diameter. The National Weather Service has only "officially" logged 30 megawedge tornadoes out of the 84,000+ in their database. The BIGGEST tornado on record occurred in El Reno, Oklahoma on May 31, 2013. It was 2.6 miles across! That said, researchers found evidence that the Mulhall, Okla. tornado on May 3, 1999 had a peak "core circulation" about 4.3 miles wide. In other words, that's the diameter of the 96 mph or greater winds. Let's hope 2025 doesn't feature any megawedges! If there are, we'll be streaming them in the MyRadar Weather app!

When its time to FLEE. From Saint Libory. I was working to assume my preferred position from the north when my backroad turned into a muddy corn field access road. I was in the path of the fast moving, likely violent tornado. I stopped for about a minute to observe. No right to left no left to right. I could attempt to continue north knowing this...but it was too risky. What if the road got worse and I ended up stuck or trapped. I didn't know what was ahead and didnt have full confidence, given the look of the tornado, I bailed back south to let it cross infront of me. This is 6 minutes of video condensed into 20 seconds.

On this day, 27 years ago, we chased what is well-known as the strongest #tornado in History. This shows the F5 tornado near peak intensity, just after devastating the community of Bridge Creek, Oklahoma. Aa freshman meteorology students at OU, we stupidly abandoned our Geo Tracker and took shelter under an overpass. Research was published that overpasses can accelerate the tornadic wind and be even more dangerous. We then saw the terrible devastation in Moore, Oklahoma with horses wandering down the highway and people emerging from their destroyed homes. Over 50 people lost their lives from the May 3, 1999 tornado outbreak. There was another massive violent tornado with a supercell to the north near Mulhall, Oklahoma that peaked after sunset. The tornado outbreak was still going when I woke up for class the next morning at 7 am. This is a day that Oklahomans will never forget. Enjoy the nice weather this May 3,

The tornado was headed straight for us, and we were stuck in a ditch. On June 5, 2009, I was chasing storms with the VORTEX-2 field project near La Grange, Wyoming. My job was to navigate for Mobile Mesonet 4, which was basically a soccer-mom van outfitted with wind and temperature sensors. Our mission was to get as close to tornadoes as possible to gather data. As we drove west on a gravel road, a wall cloud began to spin faster in front of us. We turned south, making a “transect” in front of the developing tornado. The plan was simple: drive south past the tornado, then turn around once we reached its latitude. It should’ve been easy. Just make a “T-turn” to reverse course safely. I urged my driver to be careful. Right after I said that, I heard a thump. We’d slid into a ditch with a steep embankment. The driver tried to get us out several times, but it was no use. Panic set in as the tornado widened, likely moving directly toward us. I put down my camera and started pushing, but we were stuck. With no escape in sight, I felt hopeless. Then, out of nowhere, a storm chaser pulled up in his hatchback. “Do you guys need help?” Absolutely, we did! We scrambled into his car and made our escape. After driving for about a half mile, we stopped and got out to film the tornado as it crossed the road, not far from where we’d been stuck. My heart was still racing, but I felt incredibly grateful for our narrow escape—and for the chaser who saved us that day.

This family was sitting by their fire pit when the dad heard some crackling noises. He told his family they should move because of the noise and he was worried. Sure enough as they got far away from it, a gigantic tree came crumbling down right where they would have been sitting. I would be worried about the tree catching on fire since they left the fire burning in the fire pit. I’m glad the father had the wherewithal to move everyone. By the way, did you know the dad told them so? 😂 Have you ever had a huge tree fall on or near your house or other structures or maybe had a close call?

I'm very concerned about this. There was either an extreme lack of ability on the part of the Secret Service and the police to do their job or something's going on here. While the Wellfleet Nebraska tornado of 2025 had many extremely photogenic and memorable moments, perhaps my fondest memory was shortly after saving the semi-truck drivers life by stopping him from driving into the tornado, as the tornado nearly died but roared back to life. While not its most photogenic moment, I was yards away from the vortex, hearing its hiss as it spun the sand of the Nebraska sandhills into a slurry. Watching the video again, I feel like I'm back there, hunkered behind my vehicle to protect me from flying debris or hail. As the tornado came back to life I laughed because I had already spent such a long time dancing with this twister, I couldn't believe the show might go on. And it even got BETTER! Been hard at work covering this outbreak of tornadoes from yesterday and finally getting some time to post. This morning I interviewed Tony Matulis who survived a powerful tornado just South Gosport, Indiana last night as his house was completely destroyed around him. He tells me his brother, who lives in a camper out back came running in and pounding on the door screaming there was a tornado coming. They had just enough time to get into the bath tub and cover themselves before the tornado hit and destroyed both the RV and home. But, there was some heart warming news as this morning they found out their chicken Wall-E survived the storm! #INwx AccuWeather

Sometimes it is best to just get things off your chest… So here it goes I guess. 🤷🏻‍♂️ Friday night was like nothing I’ve ever experienced. This tornado was just… Different. It was scary. It was loud. It had a growl. It was a terrifying beast in the dark that literally destroyed a town. My only views were when the lightning illuminated this monster. Each flash it got closer and closer. It’s not appropriate to go into detail about what me and Frankie experienced being one of the first few people in town (post tornado). Everyone is probably well aware of what we observed and more. It’s a part of violent storms like this one. ——— Prior to the tornado hitting town, I was inside the city limits of Rolling Fork. I knew a tornado was about to strike and there were NO sirens going off. There were people out and about, going about their lives. We honked the horn over and over on the storm tracker hoping people would see it (wrapped in storm graphics) and put two and two together. The destruction this tornado left behind was something I hope I never see again. It changed me as a person, but for good too. I’m even more fueled to warn people, learn more, improve warning process and study these massive storms we observe. For those of you who have reached out, thank you. It means a bunch. I’m good, I’m okay. I took today off (from chasing) and spent some much needed time with family. I’ll be back at it this week. 🤙🏻

“รอยยิ้มของสวาย” The photo that you miss the most when turning on your mobile phone EF: This was taken by a fan when I returned from Indonesia after MGI pageant. During that time I remembered that I faced a lot dramas and had to keep so many things to myself until I felt like I had lost my mind. There're so many issues during that time and, on that day, I remembered that I was at the airport trying to smile and laugh although deep down I felt sad. Then I saw a huge crowd of fans, I think it's what people call "the airport was bursting". My fans saw me and they knew that I was in bad shape and they tried to cheer me up, gave me encouragement and, via eye contact, showed that they understood how I was feeling. This was the biggest smile that I had on that day. I felt that I could smile because of my fans. Without them, I couldn't muster the strength to smile that wide...you could clearly see these lines on my cheeks and all my teeth. So I captioned this photo "Smile of Sawai". 3 years ago tonight, a violent tornado tore through the town of Rolling Fork, MS. The aftermath was and still is the most humbled I've ever been in 18 years of storm chasing. I remember pulling into Rolling Fork just after the tornado passed, we had shot this video SW of town, so I didn't know if it was a direct hit or a graze. Initially I thought the tornado may have passed just north as I could only see relatively minor damage in front of us. We were still in the RFD so visibility was rough, but as the wind decreased, a lightning flash revealed that everything around us was flattened. We spent the next hour or so pulling residents out of rubble on Mulberry Street. The fire and police station had been hit, so recourses were limited and I remember feeling helpless, not knowing what to tell people what to do after we got them out. I'd just say something like, "go towards the main highway and hang tight" as I assumed surrounding cities would send crews shortly. It felt like an eternity but soon EMS from Vicksburg and Yazoo City swarmed the town and we were able to leave. I've spent some time talking to people from Rolling Fork after this tragic event and it sounds like things are getting back to some sense of normalcy. I hope to visit again soon and reconnect with some of the folks we met on that terrible night.
