BREAKDOWN | Fire Point's FP-7 footage is doing the rounds, and it's worth understanding what the thing actually is. It's a Ukrainian-made ground-launched ballistic missile, and it's pretty clearly Kyiv's answer to running out of ATACMS early last year. Here are the figures the company is putting out, up... show more

🇺🇦 Ukrainian defence company Fire Point announced that it is moving to test strikes with its new FP-7 ballistic missiles on Russian targets. The FP-7 is comparable to the US ATACMS missile but costs half as much, with a range of up to 300 km. Fire Point is also developing a new FP-9 ballistic missile with a range of up to 850 km. This will allow Ukraine to strike targets in Russian territory that were previously out of reach.

‼️ Ukraine’s Fire Point company says it is moving to the next stage of testing its new FP-7 ballistic missile, including test strikes against targets in Russia. Chief designer of Fire Point company Denys Shtilierman Denys Shtilierman on the FP-7 ballistic missile: ▪️ FP-7 is an analog of the American ATACMS missile, but costs about half as much; ▪️ Range: up to 300 km, depending on the weight of the warhead; ▪️ The missile, based on the 48N6 used in the S-400 air defense system, features a modernized airframe and new electronics; ▪️ The launcher is simplified and built on a standard trailer, allowing for quick launches and easier concealment of the system; ▪️ Fire Point manufactures all components itself - from engines to the flight controller - while the warhead is manufactured externally on order; ▪️ Production begins even before official codification in order to avoid delays in the number of units produced. The company is also developing a new FP-9 ballistic missile with a range of up to 850 km, which would allow Ukraine to strike targets inside Russia that were previously out of reach. 📹: Channel 24

Key statements by chief designer of Fire Point company Denys Shtilerman Denys Shtilierman on the Ukrainian FP-7 and FP-9 ballistic missiles: ▪️ The FP-7 ballistic missile will soon be tested against targets in Russia. ▪️ A clone of the S-300 missile has been developed for existing launchers. After integration with radar systems - a complex process - it could form the basis of an anti-ballistic shield under the Freya project. ▪️ The missiles are cheaper than the original S-300 due to simplification and the use of new manufacturing technologies. ▪️ The missile can also be used as a cheaper analogue of ATACMS. This is how the FP-7 missile with a range of up to 300 km, depending on the warhead, was developed. ▪️ The FP-7 warhead is expected to be larger than that of ATACMS, while the missile itself will cost 2.5 times less. ▪️ The developers say they are ready to produce as many FP-7 missiles as ordered. Unlike Flamingo, which currently faces engine production issues, FP-7 has no manufacturing bottlenecks. ▪️ Combat use of the FP-7 is expected to begin before summer. ▪️ The longer-range FP-9 ballistic missile is also intended, among other things, for strikes on Moscow - according to the developers, attacks on provincial targets do not impress Russia’s top leadership. ▪️ Tests of the FP-9 are expected to begin in early summer. The engine is currently being finalized. The missile’s range is up to 800 km. ▪️ FP-9 will be difficult to intercept: the speed of the Iskander-M is about 800 m/s, while FP-9 is expected to reach 1200 m/s. ▪️ The goal is for 25% of the missiles to penetrate Moscow’s air defenses and hit their targets. Cruise missiles and drones cannot reach targets in Moscow because they are intercepted. ▪️ Our luck is that in Russia the cost of missile production is inflated several times over because of theft.

Denys Shtilierman Denys Shtilierman, co-founder and chief designer of the defense company Fire Point, on Ukrainian ballistic missiles: ▪️ "FP-7 - a range of up to 300 kilometers, with a warhead of up to 250 kilograms, depending on the distance." ▪️ "FP-9 - a range of up to 850 kilometers, with a warhead of up to 800 kilograms, also depending on the distance. Everything for the FP-9 is ready except the engine. Once the engine is finalized, we’ll have a clear understanding of the cost. This ballistic missile is expected by mid-year." "850 km-range ballistic missiles fly farther, carry more, and are cheaper than Iskanders. Their impact speed is one and a half times higher than that of the Iskander." On a massive strike on Moscow: ▪️ "I would certainly carry one out. Everything there is in very poor condition. And they [Russians] are still learning during the war. They have not yet intercepted ballistic missiles. They have never done it before. They have nothing to learn from. They will eventually learn to intercept ballistic missiles, but that will take time."

FP-1 and FP-2 are the result of continuous development, engineering expertise, and operational experience gained alongside the military. From the first versions to today: FP-1 — up to 3,400 km with a 60 kg warhead. FP-2 — up to 700 km with a warhead of up to 200 kg. And this is just another step in the ongoing evolution of the system🇺🇦

Martin Casado explains AI as a fundamentally new abstraction layer of computing: "I don't think in the history of computer science that I can recall have we ever abdicated actual reasoning or logic. It's always been a resource. It's been like compute, network, and storage..." "And then the human is putting in the high-level thing, and it's using the compute, network, and storage to calculate the answer." "But now I feel like you're actually abdicating thinking in a way, where you're like, 'Tell me the answer.' Like, 'I'm not even really sure what the question is.'" "This is the first time it feels like a different layer of the stack. Maybe this really is the next abstraction, which is more of a human-level abstraction, which doesn't map directly and so is actually different... You kind of pray to the model god in the right words, and then it produces the answer that just ends up being useful." martin_casado

Jack Perez on "Wild Things 2" (2004): "This film is about mercenary characters doing everything and anything they can to get what they want. This is a movie that knows what it is. It is a self-aware thriller and that means, it has all the requisite thrills, violence & s € x- but it is slightly over the top and it knows it's over the top and that's part of the fun of it. This movie is kind of like a big comic book it's not enormously deep. (...) It's got a lot of sh!t in it. It's got all the stuff that you that you want in a picture like this and it's coming at you at a hundred miles an hour. That's the point of the movie." ("Wild Things II: Making the Glades", 2004)

Rick Rubin on being addicted to the miracle of creation: “I like the moment of revelation. So we're working on something and it's just okay. It's boring. I'd rather not be there. That's how it feels. But then something happens and it's like magic. Something appears. It's not like we made it. Something comes up in the process. It's conjured in the process. It’s like a miracle and that's the thing that's addictive. That feeling when it's like it's not good, it's not good, it's not good, it's not good. We try something and it doesn't work. Try something else and it doesn't work. But then all of the sudden what we're listening to is really cool. That's the [addictive] feeling, that moment of discovery where it goes from nothing to something really good. And then the whole rest of the process after that is protecting that because it's super delicate. When it happens it's like this miracle happened and this magic thing happened and now we have to protect it through the rest of the process to not ruin it. It's scary because you don't want it to end. You don't want it to stop because we know if it stops, we can't control it. We can't do it again. It's not like that. It's this moment in time where something magical happens. So we spend a lot of time waiting and I can't say that's fun. Waiting is not fun.”
