For example: -A psychiatrist proactively raised assisted suicide to a man in his 40’s with inflammatory bowel disease, who was undergoing a mental health assessment. Canada's MAID program: -Designed for individuals in an advanced state of irreversible decline. ie. terminal illness. -96% of Canadians who have received MAID, are white. -An Ontario man was assessed at a Tim Horton's parking lot & then driven straight to the procedure by the same doctor. -An individual who suffered from seasonal depression was denied MAID in Ontario, but received it in BC. He had complications from diabetes but was not terminal. -Multiple hospitals have offered MAID before treatment. A practice that should result in the revocation of the Doctor's medical license. -The Liberals included mental illness, but as an exclusion that expires next year. Meaning, if it's allowed to expire, MAID will be available for those with mental illness. None of this is compassion. There is no version of these examples, that is medicine. The Quebec College of Physicians says euthanizing disabled babies "may be an appropriate treatment." "The CMQ reiterates that medical assistance in dying may be an appropriate treatment for babies suffering from extreme pain that cannot be relieved and who have severe malformations or serious polysymptomatic syndromes that destroy any prospect of survival," they told the Daily Mail. "The CMQ believes that parents should have the opportunity to obtain this care for their infant under these well-defined circumstances." Medical Assistance in Dying (MAID) is legal in Canada. Patients don't need to be terminally ill to qualify. "In two years, the mentally ill will qualify for MAID, and parliament has recommended granting access to minors," the Daily Mail reported.

Sometimes a short news video clip might not capture the nuance of discussion at Oireachtas Committee hearings. The RTE News coverage of Tuesday's hearing is a case in point. Prof Theo Boer had a lot to say about ‘Assisted Dying’ and Euthanasia in his own country. The big takeaway is that Euthanasia becomes the last resort for people afflicted by loneliness and fear: ‘In the past 20 years, the numbers have quadrupled and… the increase seems to accelerate rather than slow down. In some neighbourhoods assisted deaths account for between 15% and 20% of all deaths.’ ‘The second development we have seen is an expansion of the pathologies - the reasons underlying a request to die … we see a shift to patients who fear years or decades of loneliness, alienation and care dependency… This expansion is motivated - this is important for the committee, as Members of Parliament, to take into account - by a logic of justice, the question as to why euthanasia is provided only for terminal patients, for example?... After all, a person can suffer very much for non-medical reasons as well.’ ‘That is why we have now a law in parliament that legalises Euthanasia for all people over 74 years, with or without an illness…Their age is the only reason they can have 'Assisted Dying'. That in turn is why we now have a regulation that allows parents to request Euthanasia for their young children aged from zero to 11 years old. To legalise ‘Assisted Dying’ is to hinder hope and drive despair.

I am convinced it is only a matter of time before we take the next hurdle, namely, allowing children of dementia patients to request Euthanasia for their demented parents.’ ‘There is a saying that people can live 30 days without eating, three days without drinking, three minutes without oxygen but not three seconds without hope. Sometimes it is the total absence of hope, either in the persons themselves or in their surroundings, that contributes to their suffering.’ For those who are involved in suicide prevention work, or in keeping hope alive for elderly people, or who are committed to caring professions which are built on hope, I recommend you pay attention to these Oireachtas hearings (see Attached is a short clip of my own engagement with Prof Boer at the Committee on Tuesday. To legalise ‘Assisted Dying’ is to hinder hope and drive despair.

After seeing videos of the wildfires in Canada, and witnessing the smoke which is worse than I've ever seen before, I feel like humanity has crossed the Rubicon. I don't have any optimism today. Is there any reason to have any? It's a one day at a time thing for me. The people who deny that we are witnessing ecocide and climate degradation of a magnitude that is "faster than previously expected" have a blindfold on- really too afraid to face reality or climb out of the echo-sphere of denialism.

And when they look at each other, they don't see anyone on the other side that is better than they are, is more heroic, has more courage. They in a real sense, I suspect they despise each other because there isn't anyone on the other side that is better than they are, and they are looking at the worst reflection of themselves
