Just spent two days in Manhattan… Was way cleaner, safer and organized than expected. Biked all over town and I didn’t see a single concerning thing. I’d would have no concerns taking my young children there. Contrast that to the West Coast, like Seattle, where I was a few months ago, which was over run with rampant drug abuse and filth. Some cities have recovered better from the pandemic than others. New York is doing great.

A Bell 407 collided with a open hangar door while trying to depart a airport hangar alleyway in Utah. I’ve seen several similar accidents happen over the years and this accident was easily preventable. For all the helicopter pilots out there, please do not takeoff from a small hangar alley like this and at a bare minimum close the hangar door. This 407 produces hurricane force winds with its rotor wash and could have easily forced FOD out of the hangar and into the aircraft. This aircraft was on a dolly with a tug and it would have probably taken the pilot an extra 5 minutes to find a more open and suitable location to depart from. You can also produce your own mechanical turbulence from the rotor wash hitting buildings and going back into your rotors make your hover less stable. Thankfully the only occupant onboard was the pilot and they were able to walk away with non-life threatening injures according to news reports. I also highly encourage unhooking any tow equipment for the dolly and moving it out of the way before taking off. So many times it just comes down to simple laziness and complacency. PS. Those are some gorgeous looking hangars! 🎥 KSL

Air Refueling is not like an airliner cruising at altitude, the receiver pushes the tanker around with it's bow wave. The digital autopilot like to 'wind up' and then pop off with the aircraft out of trim. This would usually surprise the tanker pilots and it would take a few moments to react. It's likely what happened in this E-3 breakaway video. The E-3 stressed out the -135s autopilot by coming in quickly, and then doing a little boble (up/down motion). At the 0:10 mark, the autopilot kicks off, at the 0:11 mark, the Boom Operator is holding on to the pallet we layed on because he's going 0g.

While the US finally had a break from tornadoes, it was CANADA that surprised many when it dropped a wedge tornado near Shoal Lake, Manitoba yesterday evening. In this radar loop, you can see where this tornado's origins came from starting with the outflow boundary (the line of weak reflectivity values the storm pops out from to the east of the radar site). Outflow boundaries concentrate extreme low-level rotation and force rapid upward motion, such that when supercells interact with these boundaries, the pre-existing spin can be stretched into tornadoes. These can happen super fast, and it remains something we don't fully understand. In the span of 30 minutes, we went from there being no discernible storm to there being a wedge on the ground, without a mesocyclone or a nudger. What is even more amazing is that despite Canada's radars being lower-resolution compared to what we have in the US, you can still quite clearly see the hook echo and the eventual debris ball that forms on reflectivity. The trained NWS meteorologist and radar operator shifted the radar scanning strategy to better detect lighter, lower-level precipitation. And to kiss my daughters goodbye tonight because we stayed. Now I mostly blame the over sensationalist media for hyping everyone up making it sound like this was going to make landfall as the most catastrophic storm in history. It literally made landfall as a Cat 3 120mph winds. Thats far from the largest. People saw that it was a Cat 5 with 200 mph winds when it was in the middle of the ocean and thought it would land at that. TikTok and random “weather people” didn’t make this any better. It’s like the whole country was watching us like NASCAR… hoping to see that fatal crash. It’s messed up.

The storm hyped as one of Louisville’s biggest ever will end up being only the second largest snowstorm we’ve had…in the past year As of this morning, even with the storm not over, updated projections indicate that this storm won’t top the 9 inches we got in January of 2025. Snow, sleet, soda etc. Whatever it was, it didn’t pile up. Roads are still terrible and the freezing temps are gonna make this linger for a while. Far from a nothing burger, but once again it was wildly overestimated. “Well, it all depends on the sleet line.” If we got a foot of snow? “Told you so.” If we didn’t? “Like I’ve been saying all week… it was all dependent on the sleet line.” It’s the perfect way to never technically be wrong. With that said, I don’t think most meteorologists are out here intentionally trying to dramatize forecasts or scare people. Like a lot of things, weather is just incredibly difficult to predict. But for some reason, in that industry, it feels like simply admitting “only time will tell” or “it’s too tough to tell” isn’t allowed.
