The June 2025 comments from Broward Sheriff Gregory Tony are real, though the “outright refusal” framing is sharper than the full record. At a county budget workshop he said his office’s patch “says Broward County,” “we’re not ICE,” immigration was not a top priority, and he would not have deputies knocking on doors, entering daycares or restaurants, or “snatching people off the streets” who had not committed crimes. He already had 287(g) jail/warrant agreements and later, after Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier warned of possible suspension under state law requiring “best efforts” to support federal immigration enforcement, he wrote that BSO would continue complying with those agreements and Florida statutes. DeSantis has previously noted the power to suspend sheriffs.

@GovRonDeSantis This is 15 months old (not BREAKING). Since then: Florida AG responded by letter (June 9, 2025), warning Tony he could be removed from office by the governor for failing to comply. Tony then softened his position, writing that BSO would keep notifying ICE about illegal inmates.
