How Alberta would secede (legally): • Clear referendum – Albertans must vote “Yes” on a clear, unambiguous independence question • Negotiations required – A Yes vote triggers talks with Canada; independence is not automatic • Constitutional change – Secession needs a constitutional amendment (likely the 7/50 rule) • Indigenous consent – Treaty rights are constitutional; Indigenous nations could block or opt out • Global recognition – Alberta would still need recognition from Canada, the U.S., and the UN Bottom line: No unilateral exit. It’s legal—but extremely difficult.
