Today, CMS notified Governor Walz and the state of Minnesota that we are deferring an additional $91 million in federal Medicaid funding. This follows a pattern we can’t ignore. From the “Learing Center” scandal to the recent DOJ action involving childcare centers, Minnesota’s Medicaid program has shown serious vulnerabilities to fraud. These are not isolated breakdowns—they point to systemic issues that must be addressed. Here’s the reality: the federal government funds roughly half of Medicaid. That gives CMS both the authority and the responsibility to ensure those dollars are spent legally and appropriately. When they’re not, we act. Earlier this year, after auditing Q4 FY2025 billing, we deferred over $250 million. Of the $91 million deferred: • $76 million is tied to 14 service categories highly vulnerable to fraud • $14 million involves program integrity concerns, including payments for ineligible individuals We’re giving Governor Walz as much support as we can to turn this around. However, we cannot and will not pay bad bills so we’re asking for more information from Minnesota to verify these bills. CMS will continue using every tool available to protect Medicaid’s integrity—because this program must serve the most vulnerable Americans, while honoring the trust of taxpayers. More updates to come. As always, I’m grateful to Vice President JD Vance’s leadership as CMS plays its part in the whole-of-government effort to root out fraud.

Karoline Leavitt drops 8 major updates as the walls close in on Tim Walz and Minnesota fraudsters. Things are not looking good for those involved. 1. Leavitt did not rule out that Walz could be under a federal “CRIMINAL INVESTIGATION,” saying, “If there was, I wouldn’t be able to comment on it from up here.” 2. Secretary Bessent will travel to Minnesota later this week to address the fraud and participate in a roundtable focused on the issue. 3. “The Department of Justice has charged 98 total defendants in several Medicaid fraud and related case programs. Sixty-four were convicted, and 85 of the 98 charged were of Somali descent.” 4. “DHS is on the ground, going door to door, conducting large-scale criminal and HSI investigations. They have also sent approximately 2,000 agents to Minneapolis to assist with law enforcement and immigration enforcement.” 5. “The Department of Health and Human Services has also begun requiring a justification and photo evidence for all childcare-related payments nationwide. And they required Minnesota to conduct a full office audit of all child care centers. They also froze $185 million in funding to Minnesota.” 6. “Dr. Oz… also notified Governor Walz they’re going to begin auditing Medicaid recipients and deferring payments on claims based on waste, fraud, and abuse.” 7. “The Department of Labor is also conducting a targeted review of Minnesota’s unemployment program.” 8. “The Department of Agriculture is requiring Minnesota to conduct recertification for SNAP recipients. And HUD has launched investigations into public housing. SBA has also suspended nearly 7,000 borrowers amid suspected fraudulent activity.” “So with all of that, rest assured, this is an all-hands-on-deck effort from the entire administration to get to the bottom of this and ensure that the ripping off of taxpayers in the state of Minnesota—and it won’t just be Minnesota, it will be any state across this country where fraud has taken place. And we are protecting law-abiding, taxpaying American citizens.”

Rep. James Comer just put Governor Tim Walz on the ropes for three minutes straight over the Minnesota fraud scandal. With all eyes on him, Walz had nowhere to run. COMER: “Governor Walz, you were inaugurated as governor on January 17th, 2019 and have served in that role through two terms ever since, correct?” WALZ: “That’s correct Mr. Chairman.” COMER: “During the time period 2019 and 2020, while you were serving as governor, isn’t it true state auditors and officials raised concerns about fraud and vulnerabilities in programs overseen by your administration?” WALZ: “Uhhhh…I can’t confirm that, but I’m assuming we have always ongoing—” COMER: “I’ll take that as a yes.” “The warnings were communicated to senior officials in your administration including yourself, correct?” WALZ: “Ughh…I can’t speak if it was—” COMER: “I think the correct answer to that would also be yes.” “Despite the warnings you did not order a broad stop payment or suspension of payment in any program at that time, correct?” WALZ: “We aren’t going to stop payments that feed children until we have the proof things happened. In 2019 we did start taking action. I went to the legislature.” COMER: “When fraud concerns were raised early in your tenure in the childcare assistance program did your administration stop payments at that time?” WALZ: “The…the childcare assistance program—” COMER: “The answer is no. When fraud concerns were raised—” WALZ: “Would you like me to answer or not, Chairman?” COMER: “It’s yes or no!” “You’ve already answered the question. You said you didn’t ever stop payments. That’s what the problem is!”
