Washington lifted sanctions on Belarusian banks and fertilizer companies in return. Trump called it "direct, hard-nosed diplomacy." Six days later, Lukashenko flew to Pyongyang for his first ever visit with Kim Jong Un, where he handed him a Belarusian assault rifle: "just in case enemies appear." They signed a friendship treaty and pledged deeper cooperation. The sequencing is the interesting part. He secured the American goodwill first, then visited the country the U.S. considers one of its most dangerous adversaries. He gave Trump a foreign policy win he could announce at home during a week when he badly needed one. Then he gave Kim a gun and a treaty. Lukashenko understands something most leaders don't. In a world where the U.S. is distracted by Iran, Russia is bogged down in Ukraine, and China is watching everything, a small country that keeps everyone happy becomes untouchable.
