New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani said on Wednesday at a press conference that he supports disbanding the NYPD’s Strategic Response Group (SRG), the counterterrorism unit that carried out the first mass arrests of his administration on Tuesday evening during anti-ICE protests at a Manhattan hotel. Mamdani said he is in talks with police commissioner Jessica Tisch about how to disband the SRG “in ways that are operational,” without specifying any details. As PM Modi made his first direct comment on the NEET Exam leak, I've been at Jantar Mantar on the ground for the last several hours. At the very entry, after a night of heightened tensions and violence at Tolstoy Marg, we see additional CRPF Deployment, Water Canons, Tear Gas Cannisters & Riot Police Vans at the protest site as well. Hopefully this is all strictly precautionary. Protesters though are distinctly angry about why security is being fortified. Those at the site are adamant about the demand for Dharmendra Pradhan's resignation. The CRPF did not create this crisis and I feel sad that they have been put in the firing line for a situation that can only be resolved politically. Protesters insist that those responsible for violence against cops are not from their movement . I truly hope a dialogue begins soon to de-escalate as protests have now spread to multiple cities.
