He’s trying to thread the needle and play both sides on the transgender issue, and failing. Newsom told Charlie that men in women’s sports was deeply unfair. He said it to trial-balloon a pivot back to sanity for his party after Trump’s popular-vote victory. He got destroyed for months by the activist, radical base of the Democratic Party, so now he’s pivoting back to appease the far left. This all reminds me of the very first thing Charlie said after his interview with Gavin Newsom as we were driving away from the podcast. He said, “Boy, does that guy want to be president.” Then he added that he’d “never met anybody who could lie so easily and seamlessly while looking you straight in the eye. Newsom could pass a lie detector test no matter how bold or wild the lie was.” Charlie was of course right. That was Gavin Newsom then, and it remains true now.
