Philadelphia, Pennsylvania — An off-duty Philadelphia police officer was shot and killed early Sunday, August 16, 2026, during a double shooting outside an after-hours lounge in Southwest Philadelphia Police responded shortly before 4 a.m. to the 7200 block of Elmwood Avenue near South 73rd Street and found two men suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. The officer, identified as Alhassane Barry, 29, was taken to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, where he later died from his injuries. Barry was a two-year veteran assigned to the Philadelphia Police Department's 12th District. A 35-year-old man was also shot multiple times and hospitalized in critical condition. Investigators said surveillance video showed people outside the lounge before a confrontation. A police vehicle was seen driving past the location shortly before a fight broke out, followed by gunfire and people fleeing the area. Police said it remains unclear what led to the shooting. Police released images of a suspect and described him as approximately 6 feet tall, with a thin-to-medium build, dark complexion and medium-to-bushy cropped hair. He is believed to be in his mid-to-late 20s. At the time of the shooting, he was reportedly wearing a black hooded jacket, black pants, a light-blue surgical mask and black sneaker-style boots. Police also said he had a long key chain hanging from his pants and wore a large wristwatch. As of August 19, police said they had identified the suspect but were withholding his name because charges had not yet been filed.
