Breaking today: America's Rapid Response Force, Iwo Jima Amphibious Ready Group (IWOARG) - 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) Special Operations Capable is deploying to SOUTHCOM 🇺🇸 In a "dramatic show of force," Natasha Bertrand reports that 4,000+ Sailors and Marines will deploy to the waters around Latin America and the Caribbean to combat drug cartels and provide POTUS with a broad range of military options. In addition to IWOARG, comprised of flagship amphibious assault ship USS Iwo Jima (LHD 7) and amphibious transport docks USS San Antonio (LPD 17) and USS Fort Lauderdale (LPD 28), the U.S. Navy is reportedly tasking several guided-missile destroyers, a Tico cruiser, nuclear-powered fast attack sub, and P-8A Poseidon aircraft to U.S. Southern Command. "The move is part of a broader repositioning of military assets to the SOUTHCOM area of responsibility that has been underway over the last three weeks. The additional assets are aimed at addressing threats to US national security from specially designated narco-terrorist organizations in the region." (CNN) The ARG is "capable of conducting global missions to accomplish U.S. strategic goals, deter adversaries, and ensure unimpeded commerce by keeping the high seas open and free in accordance with international law. The 22nd MEU (SOC) provides a forward-deployed, flexible sea-based Marine Air Ground Task Force capable of conducting amphibious operations to include enabling the introduction of follow-on forces and designated special operations to meet Combatant Commander’s requirements."
