A school student from Wellawaya is currently receiving treatment in hospital after being assaulted by police officers. The incident took place in the Kuduoya area, where the student was stopped by officers while riding a motorcycle. During the stop, the officers asked to check his license, but the student explained that he had left it at home and offered to return and show it later. In response, two officers reportedly handcuffed the student and attempted to assault him. Local residents who witnessed the situation intervened and strongly protested, causing the officers to release the student. Despite this, the student suffered injuries and was taken to Thanamalwila Regional Hospital for medical care. The student, who is in the thirteenth grade at a local school, remains hospitalized following the incident.
