Protecting animals during a disaster should be non-negotiable. Glad Florida is treating this seriously.

Leaving a dog to suffer or die in a hurricane gets you a felony in Florida.

Awesome. I still remember boats In Louisiana leaving dogs that swam behind them. They could have held them on the boats imo.

Trolls like Eric Daugherty 🤡never miss an opportunity to transform a basic, universal human duty like animal welfare into a cheap political PR stunt for Ron DeSantis. Protecting pets from a hurricane is common decency, not a groundbreaking victory for a partisan brand. + 2/3) While the passing of "Trooper's Law" is undoubtedly a positive step for animal rights, the way MAGA proxies weaponize it online to farm clicks and display "toughness" shows the absolute exhaustion of their content machine. They need a crisis just to record a validation video. + 3/3) True leadership means managing a disaster with structural competence and securing the lives of all citizens, rather than relying on internet sycophants to turn a tragedy into a political campaign highlight. The storm is coming, Eric, and your empty propaganda won't hold the floodgates.

Legal ramifications for abandoning a pet seems a bit harsh, especially a felony.

Not much of a flex for someone who has been Governor for awhile down in Florida. It’s not like they have never get Hurricanes. No one should leave their pets outside but so many people do in other extreme weather. Many people do not deserve to be pet owners!

A dog receives more care and empathy than a woman miscarrying a fetus in the hospital parking lot. Of course people will care for their pets.

Someone tied a dog to a fence on I-75 and treated that as a plan. Florida turned it into a felony and named the law after the dog. Hard to argue the priorities got that one wrong

I’m staying home, even though I’m right in the path of the storm - probably a direct hit. Why? Because I don’t know where I could reasonably go for an extended period of time with my dogs. They are the most important things to me. We will be together, no matter what.

WATCH: Today I attended the Hurricane Isaias preparedness press conference in Pensacola, Florida where the hurricane is expected to make landfall this weekend as a category 3 storm. This is the first hurricane in Florida since Trooper’s Law took effect — and I asked Senator Rick Scott Rick Scott about it today in Escambia County. Trooper’s Law (SB 150), signed by Governor DeSantis Ron DeSantis in May 2025 and effective October 1, 2025, makes it a third-degree FELONY to restrain and abandon a dog outdoors during a declared natural disaster or while a mandatory or voluntary evacuation order is in effect. Penalties can include up to five years in prison and a $10,000 fine. It is named for Trooper, the bull terrier a Florida Highway Patrol trooper rescued after he was left chained to a fence in rising floodwater along I-75 during Hurricane Milton in 2024. Hurricane Isaias is the first storm where that law is actually on the books. Escambia County has already ordered evacuations for Zones A and B, plus mobile homes and low-lying areas, and local shelters are pet-friendly as long as you can prove your dog is up to date on its vaccines. At today’s press conference I asked Senator Scott how state authorities in Florida and Escambia County will enforce Trooper’s Law and hold people accountable so pets are not left tied up and abandoned as this storm comes in. Protecting people and protecting pets are not separate jobs in a hurricane. If you evacuate, take your animals with you. Do not leave them chained outside. If you see a dog restrained and abandoned during this storm, report it to local law enforcement or animal control immediately and document it on your phone. If possible, rescue the dog yourself if you think it’s going to drown. Trooper’s Law exists so that what happened to Trooper does not happen to any pet in Florida ever again. If you abandon your dog during the storm, you will be charged with a felony and I will make you famous for all the wrong reasons. Thank you, Senator Scott for thinking of our furry friends. I hope everyone stays safe! Michelle Salzman Jimmy Patronis My Escambia Rick Scott ECSO News Matt Gaetz Megan Weinberger
