Only 54% of New York City public school students can read at their grade level, and teachers' unions aren't making this any better. In fact, they're a big reason for why this is the case at all. The UFT, statewide NYSUT, and the AFT devote immense sums towards political activism, oftentimes on issues that have nothing to do with education, and at other times, on things that actively make it worse. Teachers are fed up. Some are leaving the union entirely, since 2018, enrolment of active members has declined at a time when the number of FTE educators increased 7%, and more will probably do so as union leadership broadens the scope of activism into an ever greater range of issues — that members themselves are likely to disagree on. Nor does the phenomenon of unions as political-machines help students — New York City spends an incredible amount of public education in exchange for very poor outcomes. Unions should restore their focus on direct contractual advocacy. Teachers should be able to decide for themselves what political causes they want to support. City Journal

Where did they get all this money? The answer is labor unions. Why? Because labor unions scratch the backs of California politicians, and then those politicians scratch back. It’s just another scam. Combined, organized labor contributed $50 million — which accounted for roughly 80 percent of the Yes on 50 campaign. The largest single contributor was, of course, the California Teachers Association. These teachers’ unions spent roughly $30 million on Prop 50. In a move that should outrage every parent in America, teachers’ union boss Randi Weingarten is threatening legal action to stop President Trump’s executive order dismantling the Department of Education. Instead of supporting a plan that puts more money and control in the hands of parents and states, Weingarten and her union are fighting to keep the corrupt failing D.C. bureaucracy intact—prioritizing their own power over the success of America’s children. For decades, the Department of Education has spent over $3 trillion while test scores have plummeted, in including Democrat-run cities where students are trapped in failing schools. Nearly three-quarters of eighth graders can’t do basic math, and seven-in-ten struggle to read. But instead of fixing this disaster, Weingarten and her union (American Federation of Teachers) is focused on keeping their political machine running—blocking reforms, protecting bad teachers at the expense of students, and demanding more taxpayer money with nothing to show for it EXCEPT BAD RESULTS.” To be clear, statistics show that the Board of Education has failed at its mission of education students properly, and if we are one hundred percent honest with ourselves, the teachers must take some of the responsibly.
