I want to recognize the six heroic 3rd Infantry Division Soldiers who acted without hesitation. In the face of danger, they ran toward it—risking their lives to stop the shooter and protect their fellow brothers and sisters in arms. Their swift, selfless actions stopped the bloodshed and saved lives. These Soldiers are heroes. They represent the very best of our U.S. Army and our Nation: courage, sacrifice, and unwavering duty. Today marks 81 years since D-Day, an anniversary etched into the soul of our nation and the free world. On June 6, 1944, tens of thousands of Allied soldiers stormed the beaches of Normandy, not knowing if they would survive the day, but knowing freedom was worth the cost. Their courage broke the grip of tyranny and set the course for the liberation of millions. We owe an eternal debt to those who gave their lives and to all who served in that sacred mission. Five years ago today, 13 U.S. service members were killed in the Abbey Gate bombing during the chaotic withdrawal from Afghanistan. It remains one of the clearest failures of the last administration, a rushed, poorly planned exit that left Americans and allies behind and handed the country back to the Taliban. Veterans and private citizens stepped up when the government failed, risking everything to get people out. We owe it to those 13 warriors and their families to never forget what happened, or how preventable so much of it was. Never forget Abbey Gate.

American soldiers are well trained professionals and skilled warriors, yet their leaders repeatedly send them into unjust wars. And if either one of you could talk about that, and then just my — my second question would be the Pentagon recently, this week gave well-deserved award upgrades to the members of Gulf Company 21 Marines who served at HKAI and Abbey Gate during the withdrawal and evacuation. I wonder if you, Mr. Secretary, could speak a little bit about that and maybe give us a little bit more in terms of what to expect from this Afghanistan review in terms of further proper recognition and proper accountability?” Secretary of War Pete Hegseth Hegseth: “On the first question, Pope’s going to do his thing. That’s fine. We know what our mission is. We know what authority we have. We’re very clear about that. We follow that the orders of the president. We’ve got lawyers all over the place looking at what we’re doing and why we’re doing it, and giving us every authority necessary under the Constitution and under our laws to execute it. So, we feel very confident across the spectrum about what we’re doing and why we’re doing it, and the legal justification that we’re following in order to do it. You mentioned the Marines at Abbey Gate, and you know, what we’ve undertaken at this Department is a historic Afghanistan review. So, we have, over the course of months, reviewed what happened leading up to and including the events at Abbey Gate and the disastrous withdrawal in Afghanistan. There’s never actually been a full accounting in this Department of the decisions that were made. A permanent reminder that when evil threatened the world, America answered the call. To every American who stormed those beaches, climbed those cliffs, and never came home: Your blood bought our tomorrow. Because of you, the light of liberty still shines bright across the globe. Today, on the Day of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, we not only recognize the soldiers defending Ukraine at the moment but also cherish the memory of the male and female Defenders who died protecting Ukraine. Some of them were farmers, some of them were poets, and some of them ran successful businesses. They wanted to live, raise children, travel... To make coffee in the morning, to achieve success at work, and to hug their loved ones in the evenings. But the war unleashed by Russia forced them to take up arms. Our brave Warriors gave their lives for Ukraine and a peaceful sky for their children. And we will do everything to finish what they fought for - for preserving our statehood and for people to live in a peaceful and free country. Let's honor the memory of all the fallen Heroes.
