Gateway was billed for services it did not provide and for services that MaineCare does not cover. Two prior audits found that Gateway overbilled MaineCare by a combined total of more than $660,000. The latest audit, covering March 1, 2021 through December 31, 2022, found that Medicare overpaid Gateway by more than $1 million during that period. DHHS also confirmed how much MaineCare paid Gateway between 2019 and 2024—between $4 million and $5 million each year, totaling more than $28 million.
