Texas Republicans are trying to rig the maps to silence Black and Latino Texans who are driving our state’s future. That’s why it was so important to me that we held our Unrig Texas Townhalls in the very communities the GOP is threatening to redraw. The past few days, I’ve been in Denton, San Antonio, McAllen, and Houston — meeting people who refuse to be shut out. What I’ve seen gives me hope: communities ready to organize, speak up, and demand fair representation. When we stand together, we’re stronger than any power grab. We’ve got one more stop on the Unrig Texas Tour this weekend. I hope you’ll join us — because when Texans stand together, we can’t be ignored.

You look at the last 12 months, you look at these Supreme Court cases, you look at this racist redistricting map in Texas — and I say racist because it is systematically diluting the voting power of Black and Brown Texans. When you look at how the districts are now drawn, a white Texan has a lot more political power. Their vote matters more than the vote of our Black and brown neighbors. It’s why, a year ago yesterday, my colleagues and I in the Texas House took the extraordinary step of breaking quorum. We left the state of Texas and we went up to Illinois in order to prevent them from getting quorum. They couldn’t take up these new maps because we were gone. They called the Texas Rangers on us to find us and and arrest us and bring us back to the Capitol.

Weak GOP leaders in Kansas just chose to stand down and forfeit the fight for a Republican congressional map. Kansas Republicans have a supermajority and can pick up a Republican House seat if they redraw the map. They are choosing not to. While Democrats redraw congressional maps to gain power across the country, Topeka is standing down. That’s not leadership and that is exactly why I’m running for Governor. It’s time for a change.
