The solution they are proposing is truly mindnumbing. Taxpayers will be funding the government run grocery stores. Now apparently, taxpayers will also be funding grants for the small businesses that the government run grocery stores are going to put out of business. The world really is upside down. Maybe we really are living in an alternate dimension.

It makes sense. Why would these locally owned or immigrant grocers pay a boatload of taxes in NY only to have their food prices undercut by a subsidized NYC owned grocery store? They are paying taxes while undercutting their own businesses. A good lawsuit makes sense.

He says he “looks forward to the competition” of battling against corporations. But what he’s failing to say is that small grocery stores, which need to make a profit to survive, will be the ones that suffer when faced with a city-run grocery store that isn’t necessarily funded by what it sells. It’s a lose/lose. Other U.S. cities (and other countries) have tried to make city-run grocery stores work. They’ve all failed, so many don’t even try anymore. Mayor Brandon Johnson in Chicago bailed on his plan to open city-run grocery stores after public criticism and feasibility concerns. Some of the consistent problems with these kinds of grocery stores are long lines, shortages, lack of variety, outdated products, corruption, bad customer service, and inefficiency. New York City also doesn’t really have a demand for these grocery stores. There are over 1,000 grocery stores already in NYC, most within walking distance. The bigger stores have sophisticated systems and are able to negotiate lower prices by buying in volume. City-run stores can’t do this since there are always so few of them if any. If Mamdani wants to spend BILLIONS of taxpayer’s money on government run grocery stores in NYC … then cut off all SNAP money. If they get government run stores & SNAP, then that’s double-dipping in my humble opinion.
