On behalf of the Lagos State government, the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Lafarge Africa PLC for the collection of non-recyclable combustible waste round the state and landfill sites, a significant step towards achieving a zero waste future for Lagos State. Through this partnership, Lafarge Africa will collect and treat non-recyclable and combustible waste from companies and Lagos State dumpsites and divert it to its Ewekoro Plant for use as an alternative fuel for production. This landmark milestone will enable Lafarge Africa support The Lagos State Govt ’s vision of a cleaner Lagos in line with the Lagos Waste Management Authority’s ambitious zero waste to landfill objective. This new agreement reiterates the commitment of the Babajide Sanwo-Olu led administration’s to continually reduce the quantum of waste that gets to landfills, ultimately leading to zero waste landfill sites. The state government is determined to continually pay special attention to wastes conversion in the state. The Lagos State Government in recent past had also signed MoU to help decommission existing landfill, MoU to convert waste to energy, MoU with a Dutch company to take off electronic waste. We are addressing the issues of waste frontally at the states; waste sorting is a culture and it is a culture that you must imbibe and build over time; separation of waste is here to stay. The MoU's benefits are wide-ranging, including the availability of reliable alternative fuel sources, cost efficiency, regulatory compliance, and alignment with ESG goals. Present at the MoU signing were the Chief Executive Officer, LAFARGE Africa PLC, Mr. Lolu Alade-Akinyemi, Special Adviser on Environment, Olakunle Rotimi-Akodu; Permanent Secretaries, Office of Environmental Services, Dr. Gaji Omobolaji and Office of Drainage Services, Engr. This pilot project will test a 2% isobutanol BLEND with diesel 🤯 Note: Isobutanol has a lower calorific value (energy content) than regular diesel. The government has also announced the rollout of E85 and E100 ethanol fuels. A 10-month technical assessment will determine whether isobutanol can be used as a seamless “DROP-IN” replacement for standard diesel. This is part of the broader strategy to reduce crude oil imports and promote alternative biofuels.

The success of India’s energy diplomacy under the leadership of PM Sh Narendra Modi Ji bears positive results even as the world is faced with serious geopolitical crises. Our energy imports continue uninterrupted even as supply chains choke. We are able to ensure easy availability of fuel for our citizens even as countries worldwide struggle to make energy ends meet. We are able to do this because India has diversified its import basket to 41 sources from the basket of 27 that existed in 2014. India not only secured its energy needs, but emerged stronger, more resilient, and better prepared for the future. While many countries struggled with shortages and soaring prices, India protected its citizens because we planned ahead, diversified supply chains, strengthened strategic reserves, expanded sourcing options, and took difficult decisions when required. PM Modi Ji’s vision has never been limited to managing crises. His vision is to use every crisis as an opportunity to build the future. India’s ethanol blending programme has grown from approximately 1.5% to the threshold of a 20% blending economy. Flex-fuel technology is creating new opportunities for consumers and farmers. E85-compatible vehicles will provide more fuel choices, lower operating costs, and reduce dependence on imported crude. At the same time, India is positioning itself at the forefront of the global clean-energy transition. Through the National Green Hydrogen Mission, the country is laying the foundation for a new energy ecosystem that can power industries, create jobs, attract investment, and strengthen energy independence.
