In close cooperation with the EU, Christodoulides has initiated discussions to address the British sovereign bases of Akrotiri and Dhekelia, describing them as a “colonial consequence” & remnant and calling for an open, frank conversation with the UK government once the Middle East situation stabilizes.The EU stated it’s ready to assist Cyprus in these talks. This bold step toward reclaiming full sovereignty over our island is inspiring. Now is the time for the same principled approach to the illegal Turkish occupation of the northern part of Cyprus, where 🇹🇷 troops must withdraw and that territory returned to the control of the Republic of Cyprus. Together with President of Cyprus NikosChristodoulides, we discussed infrastructure projects and defense cooperation. We also exchanged views on the efforts needed to achieve peace for Ukraine, the priorities of Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the EU in the first half of 2026, and coordinated positions for further diplomatic work. I thank Cyprus for its military and humanitarian support, as well as for its active participation in the Coalition of the Willing to bring a lasting peace in Ukraine closer.
