Trump’s tariffs aren’t about picking a side in a personal feud, they’re about protecting American jobs and industries from unfair trade practices. While Trudeau may call it a “trade war,” Trump’s supporters see his actions as necessary to level the playing field. In their view, standing up for domestic producers is what puts American interests first, even if it ruffles a few international feathers.

"Let’s not jump the gun. What’s going to happen is we’re going to look at all of our trading partners, starting with the ones with which we run the biggest deficits with, find out if they’re cheating the American people, and if they are we’re going to take measures to correct that wrong."

Magaziner: Nobody else can seem to figure out why we’re in this stupid war, so I guess that’s as plausible a reason as any. We’re weeks in, Americans have died, gas prices are going through the roof, and the president still can’t tell us why we’re in this war, what the goal is, or how we’re going to get out of it.
