***Cliff rescue*** SFFD received a 911 call from a person stuck on a cliffs edge at Battery Cranston. 2 people claimed the ride had risen and they had no way to get out as needed to be rescued and their cell phone only had 4% battery life left. A Cliff rescue response was dispatched and after using a location app and verbal calls, both were found and hauled up to safety using a rope system. Great work by all SFFD members resulted in the 2 people back to safety in 1 hour and nobody was injured. This is what we train for , even into the late night. #SFFD

Starlink just launched its first European satellite-to-phone service. Today. Virgin Media O2 switched on O2 Satellite on February 26. It is the first commercial satellite-to-smartphone data service in the UK and in all of Europe. Powered by Starlink Direct to Cell. What it does: If you're an O2 customer with a Samsung Galaxy S25, your phone automatically connects to Starlink satellites when you move beyond traditional cell coverage. No special hardware. No satellite phone. Your regular smartphone connects directly to space. O2's UK landmass coverage jumped overnight from 89% to 95%. That's new connectivity across an area roughly two-thirds the size of Wales, according to Virgin Media O2. At launch, the service supports text messaging and a limited set of apps including WhatsApp, Google Maps, Facebook Messenger, and X. Standard voice calls are not yet supported. Speeds are estimated around 4Mbps. More devices and apps are expected to follow. 650+ Starlink satellites now support Direct to Cell. SpaceX has signed 11 carrier partnerships to date, with similar services already live in the U.S. through T-Mobile. £3 per month. That's what O2 is charging to keep you connected in places where there was zero signal yesterday. Starlink is becoming the invisible backup layer for phone networks worldwide

[ONE KILLED AND ANOTHER INJURED BY A MOB IN A STOCKTHEFT RELATED INCIDENT] Police at Verena are investigating a stock theft related incident whereby two male persons were reportedly cornered and assaulted by an unidentified group of people after being reportedly found with livestock believed to have been stolen. One of the alleged suspects died whilst the other one sustained some injuries. The incident occurred in Verena on Wednesday, 24 December 2024. According to a report, Police as well Medical Emergency Services were called to the scene, and it was during this period when one of the men was pronounced dead, while the other was taken to the hospital for treatment. He is currently hospitalized under Police guard. The incident is believed to be linked to stocktheft incident, where 26 cattle, six goats, and a donkey were reportedly stolen from a certain farm in Verena. The Police investigation indicates that a shepherd was attacked earlier that day then robbed of an undisclosed amount of cash. Thereafter, the suspects are believed to have fled the scene in two bakkies with trailers when their vehicles got stuck in the mud, leading to their capture and attack by the mob. Two bakkies were also torched during the incident.
