New mural of Iryna Zarutska is now starting to go up in Providence, Rhode Island! Artist Ian Gaudreau had been working on a previous mural of Iryna at the LGBTQ bar The Dark Lady. But after condemnation by Mayor Brett Smiley and other protesters, the club announced it would cancel the mural project. Now the restaurant “Opa” on Federal Hill is allowing the mural of the slain Ukrainian to be painted on their building. Statement from the owner of Opa, Francois Karam, on the new mural of Iryna: “She was once an immigrant chasing the American dream. She worked to build a life for herself and lost it along the way. This mural is our way of honoring her on a building owned by an immigrant family who understands that journey.” This is great news! The mural had already been defaced with swear words, as well as "Zionist" and "baby killer supporter". And just a few hours after our shoot the mural was entirely defaced, with a red triangle—the symbol used by Hamas in its social media videos. to point out targets it is attacking. The artist has chosen not to repair the mural; its story is a reflection of the growth in anti-Semitism and anti-Israel hysteria that is characterising our era. An hour later, at approximately 4:20 a.m., a second robbery occurred at a spa in the area of Birchmount Road and 14th Avenue in Markham. Three suspects forced their way into the business while armed with a firearm. They stole one of the victim’s vehicles and fled with a quantity of cash. In both incidents the suspects arrived in a stolen white Acura. On November 28, 2024, investigators located the stolen Acura and three suspects were taken into custody for possession of the stolen vehicle. On December 6, 2024, at approximately 1 a.m., a third armed robbery of a spa occurred in the area of Victoria Park Avenue and Steeles Avenue in Toronto. On December 8, 2024, two additional robberies were reported, one at approximately 3:20 a.m., in the area of Carlingview Drive and Renforth Drive, and the other at 3:45 a.m., in the area of Finch Avenue and Keele Street.
