Donald Trump’s across-the-board tariffs are just like adding a tax on top of many things that your family buys. It’s effectively a national sales tax on imported goods paid for by families. And corporate executives are already planning to jack up prices in response.

Chief Justice Roberts' casual dismissal of birth tourism illustrates everything wrong with the Supreme Court. Americans understand that the United States is a homeland— not a hotel. But the court has become so detached from the realities confronting everyday people.

In a 6-3 decision written by Chief Justice John Roberts, the Supreme Court deemed that the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) does not give President Trump the power to unilaterally impose tariffs. ABC News' Jon Karl has more on what this means.

Lieu: The Supreme Court decision was a disgrace. Chief Justice Roberts has now led the most partisan Supreme Court in U.S. history. It appears that every decision they make happens to benefit Republicans electorally. Roberts is a political actor.

“I think it had to be a justice,” says Mark Halperin about the mystery of who leaked to Politico a draft of the Supreme Court’s landmark 2022 ruling that overturned Roe v. Wade. That justice, Mark believes, is Elena Kagan, “the finest political operative ever to serve as a Supreme Court justice.” The motive, Mark says, “was clearly to try to stop the decision.” #SCOTUS 2WAY

#BREAKING: Lawrence: “A federal judge in New York City presiding in the Court of International Trade said the time has come to ensure all of the duties are REFUNDED, those are his exact words. Judge Richard Eaton is presiding over the refunds of Donald Trump’s illegal and unconstitutional tariffs. In a hearing today on the progress of those refunds, a Customs…official estimated that they will have approved refunds of over $100 billion by the end of this month, and the only reason that is happening is that Judge Eaton has repeatedly ORDERED the Trump administration to FAST TRACK the refund process, something Judge Eaton continues to actively police, much to Donald Trump’s horror and confusion.”😳😂

Donald Trump’s plan to send out checks to the American people to rebate them for his tariffs is an admission that his tariffs have in fact increased prices. Not to mention the fact that no American has received their rebate!

#BREAKING: Lawrence: “…the Trump administration says filings for tariff refunds totaling approximately $128 billion have been accepted for processing and approximately $100 billion in refunds have been completed. After losing in the court of International Trade and then in the United States Supreme Court on his tariffs, Donald Trump decided to REIMPOSE illegal and unconstitutional tariffs using a DIFFERENT rationale in federal law—section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974. Donald Trump cited that provision in trade law in imposing his new tariffs on 60 countries claiming that those countries used forced labor as the reason for the tariffs.”🙄

Today’s Supreme Court, led by Chief Justice John Roberts, is one of America’s most conservative in a century. It has curbed, or overturned entirely, many longstanding precedents. The last court that was this consequential was, in fact, a liberal one. It was led by Chief Justice Earl Warren, who saw the role of the Supreme Court in American life very differently to other chief justices. The Economist is marking America’s 250th birthday with a special series exploring the country’s complicated relationship with its founding ideals. Learn more:
