The Liberal Government just shut down the Veterans Affairs Committee to avoid being accountable to veterans for the $4 Billion they are cutting from services for veterans. Chapter 20 para 102 of the Parliamentary Standing Orders and Procedures clearly states: “The committee Chair cannot adjourn the meeting without the consent of a majority of the members”. Yet that is exactly what the Liberals did today at the Standing Committee on Veterans Affairs. The second the Liberals got their majority they have been shutting down Parliamentary Committees which are in place to hold the government accountable. Canadians should watch closely to see the Liberals’ true colours. The moment they don’t need veterans, they shut them out and cast them aside.

Today Conservatives showed up to work for veterans at the Standing Committee on Veterans Affairs, but the Liberals canceled the meeting. Last week as soon as the Liberals had their majority they shut down committees, including improperly adjourning the Veterans Affairs Committee. This week, they are shutting down ACVA by not meeting today and later this week ensuring the meeting is closed to the public without cameras to hide what they plan to do with their new majority. If the past week is any indication, what they plan to do won’t be in the interest of veterans.

Imagine serving your country in uniform, going to Veterans Affairs for help, and being told that you should die instead. This isn't some fictional dystopia. This has happened in over 20 cases here in Canada since euthanasia/MAID was legalized, and more veterans are afraid to speak out. This must be stopped. Conservatives often criticize the Liberals for being all talk and no action, but the reality when it comes to veterans appears to be much worse. The Liberals are taking action, but it is actions against veterans. First the Carney Liberals decided not to provide Wreaths for Remembrance Day to Legions. Then the Carney Liberals cut more than $4 billion from veterans services. The Carney Liberals then cut half of the Bureau of Pensions Advocates which will result in Veterans waiting up to 5 years for their appeals to be heard. Using funds set aside for homeless veterans they paid over $1 million to Liberal insiders to give homeless veterans cameras so they could use them for an art project rather than helping them. Now the Liberals are cutting $3 million from homeless veterans claiming they couldn’t find any to help. Why does the Liberal Government have such disdain for our true Canadian heroes?

Instead of listening to the courageous veterans and survivors who came forward, along with legal experts and military members, the Liberals are ramming the bill through the House with their new majority, cobbled together through backroom deals. The brave women and men in our Armed Forces deserve better. Canadians deserve better.
