BREAKING: Peaceful protestors arrested outside the Labour Party Conference in Liverpool Yet more peaceful protesters are being arrested today and hauled from the streets by police - a scene which just a few months ago would have been shocking but is quickly becoming the norm. This is absolutely not a normal situation, and we cannot let it become so. This is a serious violation of our right to protest, happening in front of our eyes right here in the UK. Amnesty International deployed observers to monitor today’s protest who confirmed that once again the protest was conducted entirely peacefully. These arrests should not be happening. It’s clearly both ridiculous and seriously disproportionate for police to be targeting and arresting people for sitting down, quietly holding a sign. There are serious human rights concerns around not only the proscription of Palestine Action, but also the chilling consequences this decision has had. Today's ruling by the Court of Appeal is deeply disappointing. This case remains about much more than one group. What’s important for all of us to understand is that proscription is one of the strongest powers the government has. Treating protest as terrorism leaves the door wide open for governments to suppress other protest movements in the future. We have long said that the banning of Palestine Action as a terrorist organisation is a grave misuse of counter-terrorism powers with serious consequences for human rights. It is a huge overreach to treat direct action protest as terrorism. Amnesty will continue to defend the freedoms that allow people to speak out and hold the powerful to account.

Amnesty International is deeply disappointed by this decision. On 5th July this year, Palestine Action was proscribed after a vote in Parliament invoking the Terrorism Act 2000. Since then, police have made over 2,700 arrests for peacefully protesting. These arrests are unlawful. Amnesty UK has intervened in the Judicial Review in the courts and over 130,000 Amnesty supporters have called on the UK government to stop the prosecution of peaceful protestors.

“The days of your occupation are numbered!” – Mass protests erupted in Gwadar in the Balochistan region of Pakistan, demanding an end to the occupation by Pakistan. The protest was in response to human rights violations and extreme deployment of security forces in the southwestern Pakistani province. The Baloch Yakjehti Committee, which organized the protest, reported a massive police crackdown in response to the event. Over 60 people were arrested. “Human rights violations in Balochistan are at their peak. State institutions are brutally suppressing peaceful voices,” the statement added. Videos on social media and the BYC also reported the use of Pakistani armed forces firearms and live rounds to quell the protest. At least three people have been killed, and many others were injured.

The High Court ruled in February that the proscription of Palestine Action was unlawful. The Met rightly said it would stop making arrests. It has now gone back to its old, failed policy - mass arrests of people holding pieces of card, including today an elderly woman with walking sticks. This is not policing. This is the state criminalising dissent. Take action now with thousands of other Amnesty International supporters and sign the petition to end all prosecutions against these peaceful protesters.
