India: 24 transgender persons attempt mass suicide At least 24 transgender individuals in Indore’s Nandlalpura area attempted mass suicide on Thursday by consuming floor cleaner. Police said all were immediately taken to Maharaja Yashwantrao Hospital and are currently in stable condition. According to Deputy Commissioner of Police Anand Kaladgi, the incident was reportedly linked to a long-standing internal dispute between two groups within the transgender community. An FIR has been registered following statements from those involved. However, some local residents and community members claim the suicide attempt was triggered by an alleged sexual assault. Neha Kunwar, a representative of the local transgender dera, alleged that two individuals posing as journalists raped and blackmailed a transgender person in June, also stealing money. A formal police complaint was filed earlier this week, and an FIR has been registered against the accused, identified as Akshay and Pankaj. Police say both the group rivalry and the assault allegations are being investigated separately.
