Update, the Bluetooth was named something about a bomb. That was the security concern.

So many people have wearable CGM. So many people wear headphones because the announcements are non stop. @united There are a multitude of reasons. If you have a medical device it uses a Bluetooth signal. For instance, if you are diabetic and have a continuous glucose monitoring your blood sugar, you would rely on the Bluetooth signal and would not be able to turn it off. The passengers on the plane would hear a beeping all flight if you turned it off. There has to be more to this story…

Thanks for the update

It was a Bluetooth named “bomb” by a 16 year old. Reddit has all the scoop

Thanks for the update. I was sleeping. My phone had 30% power and it was going off all night. It died and I woke up to over 1 million views.

There’s a reddit post someone named their device bomb

I presume they were getting unexplainable cockpit instrument interference so better safe than sorry

Our flight just delayed in Hong Kong 🇭🇰 to Dallas, TSA requested secondary security check on all passengers requesting additional information

Thanks, Steve. I went to bed before I could even get more information on the air traffic control audio.

That's because a 16 year-old decide to name his Bluetooth a four letter word that starts with a B, ends with a B as the letter O and the letter M and it was showing up on people's devices

it's most likely that bluetooth was secondary, as in something was happening and they need to fail back to either some sensor/system where bluetooth would interfere or there was a security warning (like possible individual with a bomb or some malicious device in their checked in luggage that is triggered by bluetooth. And since they were unable to verify they basically went back to ground, probably the safest thing to do

All these excuses. U are told turn Bluetooth off it is quite simple. People who have trouble with the most simple of tasks now need an explanation on why Bluetooth could cause a problem on a plane over the ocean that may be having a malfunction. Insufferable

In order to pair headphones to the actual United movie screen in the seat rest you use Bluetooth just like you would for a personal device. Almost no one on a flight is using a wired headset anymore

You can “name” your bluetooth devices. Some moron decided it would be funny to name theirs “bomb” and then not turn it off when asked so they grounded the flight.

Guarantee the two people that didn’t turn off their Bluetooth devices only breathe through their mouths.

Update: Apparently a 16yo boy had the great idea to carry a bluetooth speaker named “Bomb” that obviously turned up on the list of bluetooth devices of other pax and cabin crew… Oh boy…!

if my vacation was ruined bc of scary scary Bluetooth there would be a different sort of emergency

Mira @CapLaloVargas

If BT would pose any real threat to the flight safety they wouldn't allow them on board in the first place.

No one normal flies @united .... garbage airline

That makes zero sense as many planes these days have seatback entertainment systems that allow you to connect your Bluetooth headsets to ... yoy could literally have more than 100 Bluetooth connections so why would a few cause an issue?

Everyone is missing the point. Someone named their device “B**B” so when passengers were pairing their devices to the inflight entertainment, one of the devices that appeared was “B**B”. That’s a little unnerving .. no? So they asked for that device to be turned off. It wasn’t.

Moral of this story. DONT BE F’ing idiot. Hope they ban that person for life across all airlines that originate or headed to US. I want to see the report on the charges now!

Curious what does Bluetooth do to cause such issue on a plane? Never heard of these announcements on a flight before.

Playing devils advocate here. Some people use bluetooth to control medical devices, eg blood sugar monitoring. Could that be part of the issue?

I guess it was just the name of the Bluetooth speaker that was paired and the word bomb in it which I know is pretty stupid to turn a flight around and go through all that. I have heard that Bluetooth could cause problems to some tech aboard the plane, but they fixed those issues that was a long time ago.

@vivalalaladiva The issue wasn't with the tech, but the word 'Bomb' that was being broadcast to all phones/tablets on the plane. Anyone who went to pair their headphones or any other device could see it. No way to 100% verify that there wasn't ill intent (or a 3rd party device on the plane).

@tparon Thanks, I only saw that it had been named such after commenting. How very stupid.

Don’t know why they can’t block blue tooth from working in the cabin.

To Palma de Mallorca? No direct flights

Classic, if you kids don't stop screaming im turning this car round RIGHT NOW 😂

Who else hates how these assholes want to bother you about their shitty credit card

Everyone knows a device name has to be self-descriptive for the Bluetooth connection to function. Did the flight crew really think this was a master criminal’s method of toying with his victims before self-detonation? 😂

The dumb thing about it: If this was an actual terrorist threat, and they had an Bluetooth explosive device on the plane, do you really think they would be stupid enough to name the device “bomb”?

so why did the fly all that way back? Why not land in Halifax? They flew right over the airport there?

Don’t ppl use Bluetooth to pair devices like headphones and mice?
