Doug Ford wants a headline and attention. Scott Moe wants Canadians to keep their jobs. That is the whole fight. Ford is out here telling reporters Saskatchewan should weaponize potash and oil like it is a soundbite. “Their agricultural sector would be dead overnight,” he says. Easy words when the mines are not in your backyard and the pink slips will not land in Vaughan. Moe’s answer was adult: “Not possible. Why would you put Canadians out of work?” Because that is what an export tax on oil and potash actually does. The United States already buys most of the potash it uses from us. We supply roughly four-fifths of those imports. Sounds like leverage until you remember America is still about half of what we sell. Cut it off and they shop Russia, Belarus, Israel. We do not find a new buyer overnight. We lose the market, we lose investment, and Saskatchewan workers eat the first punch so Ontario can look tough on TV. So ask the question nobody in Ottawa wants. Is Moe the only premier still treating Canadian jobs as the point? Ford gets the clip. Carney gets the press conference. CNN is out here acting like 50% tariffs on Canadian hockey sticks and false beards are going to destroy the American economy. Matt Egan just listed milk, honey, gloves, Christmas ornaments… and somehow forgot to mention that Canada has been hammering our farmers with massive tariffs for years. They carefully note the U.S. spared oil, electricity, and potash — then still claim this is all downside for Americans. No mention of the $60 billion deficit. No mention of Canada’s dependence on us. Just the usual “this will hurt consumers” script. America First is the only thing CNN can’t stand.

If you add services, which the US has a $25B+ in trade surplus in Canada than the actual trade deficit is much smaller, around $21B according to USTR in 2025. That's on $880B in the two trade. ~3%. > "we have more oil & gas". No you don't. Canada has more oil and almost double the gas - which is just starting to be developed at scale. We also have different type of oil which aren't substitutes and bring massive value to the US. > "we don't need their lumber". Yes you do. Not only Canada has much more lumber, the dominant supplier to the US but it is also a different type. Because of the climate, species and fiber. It is used for different purposes.
