@sama Compute is becoming increasingly synonymous with capital. Those who invest and act accordingly stand to benefit greatly. The wealthiest people will pay 100x more for a 20% better health related outcome, a 30% higher signal article recapping a topic of interest, etc.

5 years ago, Sam Altman said OpenAI had no plan to make money. The promise to investors? Build AGI -- then ask it how to generate a return. “If AGI is on the table, we take 1/1000th of 1% of the value, return it to investors, and figure out how to share the rest with the world.”

Altman says that if you asked for a definition of AGI five years ago based on software’s cognitive abilities, today’s models would already surpass it. He expects people to increasingly agree we've reached AGI—even as the goalposts move. What matters more now is economic usefulness: these models boost productivity and can already do meaningful work.

Sam Altman on the Paul Graham advice that saved Open AI: “Always make an API” Four years into OpenAI, Sam Altman and the team realized that they would have to build a really big company to fund the development of their increasingly capital-intensive foundation models. “We had this model called GPT-3,” Sam recalls. “I was turning up the urgency on the company to try and figure out a product, and we just couldn’t. It was cool, but it wasn’t good enough to make something that worked.” Then Sam remembered a piece of advice from Y Combinator founder Paul Graham that stuck with him: “You should always make an API. No matter what, you should make an API. Good stuff will happen.” Out of ideas for a product, the OpenAI team decided to make GPT-3 available as an API. “Maybe somebody will figure out something to do with it,” Sam thought. A few copywriting applications like Jasper and Copy AI did take off using the GPT-3 API, but OpenAI also noticed interesting behavior that eventually became a sleeper hit: “Some people — not a lot — would just chat with that thing all day,” Sam explains. “It wasn’t very good but there was clear user signal that people wanted to talk to the models. And given that that was the only thing besides copywriting that had real traction, we said, ‘Maybe this is just he product we should build.’” On November 30, 2022, ChatGPT was released to the public as a “research preview” using a model from the GPT-3.5 series. Greg Brockman talks about when OpenAI first realized that AGI can't be achieved with "Non-Profit" status and the decided to abandon its Non-Profit roots. "In 2017, we started to think very hard about, first of all, how do we really achieve the mission? How do we actually build an AGI? What will that look like? And we started to do the math on compute. You start to realize that it is going to take a big computer. We came across a company called Cerebras, which was building a unique piece of computing hardware. The kind of computer that they were promising, we realized, was going to be far advanced from where our compute calculations looked. As you start to realize, if we could buy a lot of those computers, we could actually probably succeed at building an AGI. If we could get exclusive access to Cerebras, that could give us an overwhelming advantage. If we could buy very large data centers, that could be something unique as well. The thing about nonprofit fundraising is that I think there is essentially a cap to what is possible there. And so Elon, Sam, Ilya, and I all agreed that the only path forward for OpenAI, and the only path to achieve the mission, was to create a for-profit entity associated with OpenAI in some form. "If people knew what we could do with compute, they would want way, way more." "The thing I am personally most excited about is to use AI and lots of compute to discover new science." "A recent cool example here is we built the Sora Android app using Codex... in less than a month." "You can imagine that way much further, where entire companies can build their products using lots of compute." Then he gives the scale: "Let's say that an AI company today might be generating something on the order of 10 trillion tokens a day out of frontier models."
