I am always pleased to meet with United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio Secretary Marco Rubio and engage in discussions focused on the interests of Trinidad and Tobago and our wider region. Today, we also shared a light moment during the historic Shield of the Americas Summit. I thank Secretary Rubio for his leadership in bringing together partners across the hemisphere for this important gathering.

Reporter: The Quad summit did not take place last year, and we have not seen the same strong unity among Quad members in the second Trump administration. Do you believe Quad unity will be sustainable? Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar: I would not say the Quad summit was cancelled, because it was never specifically scheduled. It simply did not take place. The first meeting Secretary Rubio held on the day he became Secretary of State was a Quad foreign ministers’ meeting. He then convened another Quad meeting in July in Washington, which we all attended. I would not overinterpret the absence of a summit meeting. Do stay tuned.

#WATCH | Washington DC, USA: On the visit of US Secretary of State Marco Rubio to India, South Asia analyst, Michael Kugelman, says, "This is clearly a significant moment for US-India relations... It has been quite some time since an official, a senior as Marco Rubio has visited India... It is important that he is coming to India to participate in this Quad meeting... The fact that Rubio is there to participate in the Quad Summit suggests that the Trump administration continues to be committed to the Quad... President Trump himself would be prepared to travel to India at some point later this year, presumably to participate in the leaders summit. In terms of what Marco Rubio said today about India and how it's the cornerstone for the US-India strategic partnership in the Indo-Pacific strategy... There will be some curiosity as to whether there will be follow-through in Rubio's comment as to whether we start to see this administration focus more on the Indo-Pacific strategy and ensure that India continues to be the key part of that strategy..."
