This all falls under what i can describe as the “Assimilation Trap” that ends up in humiliation which some immigrants go through when they move to western countries. The immigrant : • Arrives in a new country and wants to fit in and be accepted. • Adopts popular local social habits, like in this case drinking which is popular in Ireland. • Gets drunk like many locals do and can’t walk or drive home. • Is recorded because he stands out as an immigrant and the video is shared online and mocked. • The immigrant’s actions are treated as representation of all immigrants. What began as an attempt to assimilate or fit in becomes fuel for anti immigrant sentiment.
