At roughly the same time, an A-10 Thunderbolt II supporting search-and-rescue for the F-15E crew was hit by Iranian air defenses near the Strait of Hormuz. Despite weeks of heavy Israeli and U.S. bombings that severely degraded Iran’s integrated air-defense network, Iran retained mobile, survivable surface-to-air missile systems likely from the Khordad/Raad family or newer IRGC variants. Last night, our Special Operations forces executed an extraction. The operation involved hundreds of personnel, dozens of warplanes and helicopters providing overwhelming air cover, and intense support from intelligence, cyber, and other assets. Firefights and airstrikes occurred as the team located and extracted the officer who was hiding on a mountain top.
