Afraid to face the just and legitimate demands of the ASHA workers, the State Health Minister, who is also the Chief Minister and Home Minister, used the police machinery to obstruct and detain them. Since last night, ASHA workers from distant districts have been stopped and arrested even before they could reach Kolkata. When these measures failed, male police personnel were deployed to block and suppress the peaceful protest by women workers, in blatant violation of constitutional values, legal norms, and basic morality.

I wish to draw the attention of the Hon'ble Minister of Health and Family Welfare to the plight of accredited social activists, or ASHA workers, who are the unsung heroes of India's healthcare system. ASHA workers have played an instrumental role in improving maternal and child health, increasing immunization rates, and raising awareness about nutrition and sanitation. Their contributions are especially crucial during the Covid-19 pandemic, where they played a frontline role in the healthcare response. Despite being overburdened with responsibilities and working 12-14 hours a day, they are still classified as volunteers, and they receive meagre honorariums and incentives, which are often delayed, leaving them and their families struggling financially. In Kerala, ASHA workers only earn ₹7000 a month, and the government hasn't paid them for months. They have staged nationwide protests over the years demanding official employee status, payment of arrears, better working conditions, retirement benefits, and access to mental and social security services. Their ongoing protest highlights the systemic undervaluation of community health workers in India and particularly in Kerala.
