If they were serious about avoiding a shutdown, they would have supported the House-passed funding bill or backed my Eliminate Shutdowns Act last night. The U.S. Constitution requires Members of Congress to be paid, even during government shutdowns. If Members of Congress had to forfeit their pay during government shutdowns, there would be fewer shutdowns or they would end quicker. That’s why I’ve introduced a constitutional amendment that, if ratified, would bar Members of Congress from receiving a paycheck for the duration of a shutdown. It’s time Congress plays by the same rules as everyone else & we get back to work on behalf of the American people.
