At 7:19 p.m. EDT on Tuesday, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer asked the New Jersey Democrat if he would yield for a question. “Do you know you have just broken the record? Do you know how proud this caucus is of you? Do you know how proud America is of you?” Schumer asked as the Senate chamber erupted in applause and cheers. Booker began his speech Monday evening at 7 p.m. EDT and persisted until 8:05 p.m. EDT Tuesday, for a total of at least 25 hours and 4 minutes. With the help of Democratic senators who asked questions, he blew past the previous record set by the late segregationist Sen. Strom Thurmond, whose filibuster against the Civil Rights Act of 1957 lasted for 24 hours and 18 minutes. In his speech, Booker said President Donald Trump “has inflicted so much harm” on Americans’ safety, financial well-being, democratic form of government and sense of decency in a little more than two months in office. “These are not normal times in America,” Booker said, “and they should not be treated as such.”
