Speaking to supporters on Wednesday, Trump blamed the administration of former U.S. president Joe Biden for the way the withdrawal was handled, particularly the departure from Bagram Air Base and the abandonment of American military assets. “Instead of leaving with dignity and strength, they ran away,” Trump said. “There was really no reason for it. We were there, and I had said we would leave with power and dignity.” Trump added that although the Taliban did not like him, they would still carry out what he asked. “The Taliban didn’t like me, but they did whatever I wanted,” he said. He also criticized the decision to leave behind U.S. military equipment in Afghanistan, saying he had insisted that all equipment should be removed during the withdrawal. “I emphasized that every piece of equipment should leave with us,” Trump said. “But they claimed it was cheaper to abandon the aircraft.” Trump argued that the decision made little sense, noting that a new fighter jet can cost about $150 million and could have been flown out simply by refueling, yet officials still insisted on leaving the aircraft behind.
