POLITICO reports that multiple White House and Capitol Hill sources blame Collins for a floor meltdown that cost Republicans a major legislative win just before the House left for summer recess. “A self-inflicted loss at the hands of the VA secretary,” said one White House official. Now Republicans will have to burn precious floor time in September instead of focusing on the SAVE America Act. Doug Collins should tread carefully. Former FDA Commissioner Dr. Robert Califf said he thinks the federal government has “done their job” in responding to the cyclosporiasis outbreak. But he said the FDA layoffs under Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. will have real effects. “There was a joint committee between FDA and agriculture department that focused on the science of infections in agriculture… and it was disbanded for no apparent reason,” Califf said. “They were in the middle of a lot of important work that would have informed how to proceed forward.”
