From Iran to Iraq, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Syria and Malaysia, women are increasingly speaking out against being forced to wear the hijab or burqa by law, by state pressure, or by social coercion. I am a woman from Iran, and I testify that you, Fatima Payman, are lying. As a woman, I was sentenced to prison. I was sentenced to lashes, and I survived one kidnapping attempt and two assassination plots—simply for expressing myself. Many other Iranian women can testify that they have faced the brutality of the morality police simply for showing their hair. Many mothers are facing repercussions simply for asking why the regime killed their loved ones. That is the reality of the Islamic Republic, the regime you are whitewashing. We spoke about a young woman who lost both eyes after the Islamic Republic shot her for demanding freedom in the streets of Iran. Then one day, I finally held her in my arms. Her name is Farideh. A young Kurdish woman from Sanandaj. Blinded by a regime terrified of free women. Too many people reduce these stories to geopolitics and partisan arguments. Song of the Future honors the schoolgirl uprising in Iran and the life of 16-year-old Sarina Esmailzadeh, one of thousands of Iranian schoolgirls who took to the streets as part of the Woman, Life, Freedom movement in 2022. “You deserve to be blinded, you ugly puppet of America and Israel. Leave Germany. Go to America. Go to Israel.” These were the words shouted at Kosar Eftekhari in Berlin by people marching under the slogan of “Free Palestine” and violently attacked the victim of Islamic Republic regime. “You deserve to be blinded, you ugly puppet of America and Israel. Leave Germany. Go to America. Go to Israel.” These were the words shouted at Kosar Eftekhari in Berlin by people marching under the slogan of “Free Palestine” and violently attacked the victim of Islamic Republic regime. Kosar is an Iranian woman who was shot in the eye by the regime’s IRGC for peacefully protesting during the Woman, Life, Freedom uprising. She lost one eye, but never lost her courage. I know her personally. She is kind, peaceful, and incredibly brave. Her only “crime” in Germany is using her freedom of speech to say “Free Iran” and to speak out against terrorist groups like Hamas and Hezbollah. But instead of solidarity, she was mocked for her blindness. People laughed at her face, insulted her appearance, and praised the very regime that maimed her, chanting for Ali Khamenei while bullying one wounded woman standing alone in the street. Imagine surviving the bullets of a dictatorship, escaping to Europe, and then being publicly humiliated for daring to speak against your oppressors. Thanks to the German police for protecting Kosar and defending their right to freedom of speech. I call on all activists, university, students, college campuses and defenders of democracy to stand with Kosar in peaceful protest, to shout “Free Iran,” expose the Islamic Republic’s terror, and condemn its proxies like Hamas and Hezbollah. When I say that Germany has its own “morality police,” I am referring to the so-called “Sharia Police,” self-appointed enforcers of Sharia law. Since I published the video of a Muslim man harassing two women for not wearing “proper” clothing, I have received direct messages from many Iranian women, particularly from academia. They share the same concerns about these morality enforcers in European countries but are often silenced and labeled Islamophobic, anti-immigrant, or right-wing. Whether we like it or not, these Sharia or morality police known as “Amr bi al-maruf” a collective duty of Muslims to encourage righteous behavior and discourage immorality, exist in many European countries. Often linked to mosques, they impose their version of religious law, targeting women and girls for not wearing the “proper hijab.” This mirrors the experiences of women in Iran. In Iran, when Sharia Police violently harass women for not covering their hair, officials often mislead the world by claiming these are just religious groups, not the official police. Sources in the Muslim community in Germany report that these so-called Sharia Police have appeared in cities like Wuppertal and Berlin, harassing women under the guise of promoting hijab and Sharia laws. This issue extends beyond isolated incidents, with moral enforcers emerging in schools and neighborhoods with Muslim majorities. Our investigative work is crucial in sparking necessary conversations and actions. I’m confident that if journalists in Germany raise their voices and conduct thorough reports, it will compel the authorities to act. I recall when we urged the German government to shut down the Islamic centers. Initially, we were labeled, but eventually, the government recognized the links to terrorism and regimes like the Islamic Republic. We must continue exposing these threats. Now witness a troubling parallel to what happened in Iran: a Muslim man chasing a woman for not wearing a hijab.
