Multiple wildfires have spread across Guangxi Province in China over the last few days. This is some of the most unique topography I’ve seen on fire. Over 1,000 Firefighters have been dispatched to fight the new fires along with multiple state aircraft. The fires are said to have grown into the thousands of acres.

Bill Nye “The Science Guy” said on CNN this morning that forest fires never used to happen in the Carolinas until now. 🗨️ “There's forest fires, wildfires in the Carolinas—that didn't used to be a thing, everybody.” That sounds scary. 😱 Big, if true. But, had Nye done any actual research, he might be aware that his DNC talking points don't quite square with the facts. 🔎📖 The South Carolina South Carolina Forestry Commission (SCFC) has a wealth of information on their website. 💻 🔥 Based on the last 30 years of data, ~3,000 fires break out in South Carolina each year. 🌲 About 18,000 acres are set ablaze annually. 🪵 229,908 acres of land burned in 1950 alone, the most in a single calendar year in the Palmetto state. Of the top 10 years with the most fire burn acreage, nine of them were prior to 1970 and seven of them were at least 70 years ago. 📉 Annual fire burn acreage has decreased by 72.5% (1950-79 vs. 1994-2023). Any emergent climate signal is masked by interannual variability and increased fire suppression in the area. 🔗 🔗 The largest [official] fire on record in South Carolina was the Clear Pond Fire of April 10-15, 1976. It has grown to roughly 320,000–321,000 acres —— The Big Grass Fire in Malheur County near Jordan Valley is another major blaze at 280,000–340,000 acres —— The Coleman Creek Fire in Harney County has reached about 265,000 acres —— The Bench Fire near Warm Springs is approximately 67,000 acres —— The Hay Creek Complex in Gilliam County is around 200,000 acres —— Numerous other fires, including the Shingle, Henry, Akawa Butte, and Grasshopper fires, range from 10,000 to 70,000 acres each Multiple Level 2 (Be Set) and Level 3 (Go Now) evacuations are still in effect, particularly around the Rowe Creek Complex near Fossil, the Warm Springs and Bench Fire area, and portions of Harney and Malheur counties. —— affecting somewhere roughly between 30,000 to 75,000 families

Wildfires in Texas kept firefighters busy the last few days as fire weather conditions linger over the region. This is the Lavender Fire in Potter county, burning 18,300+ acres, but firefighters have been able to bring it to 40% contained. The 8 Ball Fire in Armstrong and Donley counties burned 13,500+ acres and is now 55% contained. Firefighters continue to work wildfires in Oklahoma, The Ranger Road being the largest at 283,000+ acres and 15% contained. The Steven’s Fire outside Hooker, Oklahoma is 13,000 acres and 60% contained, and the Poor Farm Fire outside Hartshorne, OK, is 9,000 acres and 25% contained.
