Hidden inside the small sleeping area were 18 illegal immigrants from Mexico. ​The driver, Elias Alavez-Mata of Mississippi, intended to smuggle the group further into the interior of the country, specifically targeting San Antonio as the drop-off point. ​Alavez-Mata was arrested on the spot and charged with 18 counts of Smuggling of Persons. Following his court case, he was sentenced to 2 years in prison. This is big business for these drivers and the cartel. Here is a break down to give an idea on what he was getting paid to deliver these 18 illegals. The Per-Head Rate: It is common for drivers to be promised anywhere from $100 to $500 per person successfully delivered. For a group of 18, that would put the potential "payday" between $1,800 and $9,000. ​The "Lump Sum" Offer: Some drivers are offered a flat rate for the trip (e.g., $2,000 to $5,000) regardless of the count, especially if they are using their own equipment or a commercial vehicle. ​The Debt Factor: In some testimonies, drivers admit they weren't getting paid at all in cash, but were instead working off a debt to a cartel or smuggling organization.
