Breaking… Alberta Premier Danielle Smith announces that a Citizens Initiative just got way easier. A successful initiative could call on the Alberta government to hold an independence referendum. Previously a successful Citizens Initiative on seeking independence required 20% of TOTAL registered voters to sign, but now it will just... need 10% of the voters that actually voted in the last election. This takes the success threshold from 587,952 signatures down to just 177,713 signatures: a reduction of almost 70% from the previously required success threshold. In addition the time allotted to successfully collect the signatures has been increased from 90 days to 120 days. Together the changes in Alberta Bill 54 will make a Citizens Initiative on petitioning the government for an independence referendum much more attainable. This is a good move given the imminent threat posed to Alberta by the new Carney Liberal government.show more

"I want to make sure those numbers do not get higher, and those numbers end up going lower because we're successful in negotiating a new arrangement with Canada" Danielle Smith yesterday afternoon. This video clearly lays out the Premiers marching orders. She does not support a referendum on independence, it should be said the very opposite is true. She has been instructed and will do what she can to prevent the support of separatism breaching 30%. The newly tabled Bill 54 will lower the threshold required to trigger a citizens initiative. A direct and what I believe to be the intended consequence of changing the threshold is less public support for the referendum question which follows a successful citizens initiative. Lower threshold+less public support= failed referendum. In short, a lower threshold to initiate the citizens initiatives will result in a higher likelihood that a referendum stemming out of the proposed legislation also fails. Alberta Separatists need to have a serious discussion on not just how much support is needed to hold a referendum but also how much support is needed to hold a SUCCESSFUL referendum. #AlbertaSeparation

The independence movement has gained steam with the rise of Prime Minister Mark Carney, following the 10-year reign of former prime minister Justin Trudeau. Both leaders representing the Liberal Party of Canada, have failed to adequately meet the needs of the province of Alberta. Imbalanced federal programs like equalization, along with numerous climate-driven policies that hinder economic development in Alberta’s resource sector, rest at the core of this divide. With the federal government remaining in the hands of the Liberal Party of Canada, many in Alberta have expressed a desire for this province to finally leave Canada’s confederation. Others who share this grievance towards Ottawa see an independence movement as leverage for the province to get a better deal. Premier Smith has also engaged on this matter by proposing changes to the referendum system in the province, reducing the required number of signatures needed for an independence question to be put to a vote. This would allow for an independence referendum to be presented and voted on early next year. This current by-election may be a strong indicator as to how the province will vote in the expected 2026 referendum. Olds-Didsbury-Three Hills has previously elected a separatist MLA to Alberta’s Legislature, Gordon Kesler. Cameron Davies, leader of the Republican Party of Alberta, hopes to be the next separatist MLA for the province, giving a voice to that, and other conservative issues in the Legislature. Premier Smith’s hand-picked candidate Tara Sawyer will be fighting to retain this conservative stronghold for the UCP. Wildrose Loyalty Coalition candidate Bill Tufts is the second independence-oriented candidate on the ballot, who highlights the essentiality of a referendum next year. Bev Toews is the NDP candidate, who may hope to manage a victory through vote-splitting between independence and UCP oriented voters, however a clear victory would be unlikely. In contrast to this by-election, two more will be taking place simultaneously in Edmonton of which, one used to be the seat of former premier Rachel Notley. Current Alberta NDP leader Naheed Nenshi hopes to be elected in the remaining district, as he has been party leader for now over a year without having a seat in the Legislature, something his critics have levied against him. Results in the Olds-Didsbury-Three Hills election will specifically highlight the appetite Alberta has regarding an independence referendum expected for next year, the size of the conservative movement which rests right-of the UCP, and how the NDP will be able, or unable, to take advantage of this potential conservative voter divide. Could Alberta actually leave? Keith Wilson joins Glenn Beck Americans with an interest in their northern neighbours are curiously looking on, wondering about the possibility of Alberta breaking away from the rest of Canada to create a new province. Glenn Beck raised the subject with Keith Wilson during the prominent Alberta independence activist and constitutional lawyer's appearance on Blaze Media's The Glenn Beck Program. “Is there enough support in Alberta to actually get that done,” Beck asked, in addition to whether Wilson actually thought “Canada would allow” the province, “the Texas of Canada,” to leave Confederation. Wilson pointed to the unique legal framework in Canada, which allows a province the ability to exit through a referendum. “If a clear majority of voters within a province vote on a clear question for independence, that triggers two routes to independence,” the constitutional law expert said. “One is the parties have to enter into good faith negotiations, meaning Alberta needs to go into a meeting room with the federal government and the other provinces and say, 'alright, we've got national parks here; we've got military bases in Alberta. We'll pay you, the federal government, a certain amount of money for those bases and national parks,'” Wilson explained. “The other path is if the parties don't enter into good faith negotiations,” he continued, noting that was “something we're very concerned about here in Alberta.” This route could see a “unilateral declaration of independence,” something that “relies on international recognition,” he cautioned. “If the United States and other countries are prepared to recognize Alberta independence, it creates a clear pathway,” Wilson told the American host. Wilson and Beck also discussed two other federal policies that are contentious in Alberta — the Liberal government's gun grab and its continued expansion of the Medical Assistance in Dying program. Independence campaigners assert they've collected enough signatures to trigger the citizen-led referendum, with a vote expected to take place in fall 2026.
