PLEASE SHARE 🙏🏾 | This incident took place in Vhimba, Rusitu in Chimanimani, in the land of Mutape Hlabiso and Chief Ngorima. Vhimba is the area that borders Zimbabwe and Mozambique. The problem is that the Chinese miners have been extracting gold for about one month in the major rivers Haroni and Rusitu. This has resulted in a severe lack of clean water for both household use and irrigation. Communities across the border in Mozambique are also complaining about the polluted water. The last time these miners came, they were expelled by the border security army because they did not have the required documentation. They returned again last month, still without a single valid permit. Today, the entire community gathered to understand what is happening and demanded to see the papers. The border army was also present. The community is complaining that the Chinese miners moved their machinery and set up camp directly in people’s fields without any consultation or agreement. Now that the farming season has begun, there is no land left for cultivation. The community also says they were never notified about the arrival of these Chinese miners, as is legally required under Section 13(2), Section 18(2), and Section 315. The rivers have become polluted. Clean water is no longer available due to siltation. Traditional swimming and fishing spots, most notably the Nyakwaa Forest and Pool, once a tourist attraction at the base of the Chimanimani Mountains, have been destroyed. When the miners realised that locals were coming, they dug trenches across the road leading to their mining site to stop vehicles from passing. They did this using an excavator, as shown in the video, and then blocked the road with their tipper trucks. These trenches stretch for close to 5 km from their mining site. This did not stop people; they continued the journey on foot. Elderly men and women were transported using available motorbikes. Ten representatives from the community confronted the Chinese miners. When questioned, the Chinese claimed they had been sent by the government to carry out river rehabilitation, to fill in pits and restore the environment. But when they were asked why they were mining gold, digging new pits, and using machinery such as shaking tables in the river, they changed their story and said they also had permits to mine gold. When the community asked to see these permits, not a single document was produced. Asked who brought them to the area, they named four local leaders: - Chief Peter Ngorima - Headman Steady Hlabiso - Councillor Matayi (known for mining widely, including in Rusitu’s rivers) - Village Head Matsatswa Local rumours say that when Chief Ngorima was questioned, he falsely claimed he had received a direct order authorising the Chinese to mine. Headman Steady was reportedly paid by the miners. Councillor Matayi is seen as complicit, and Village Head Matsatswa allegedly received irrigation pipes as a personal benefit. The community instructed the Chinese miners to return to Village Head Matsatswa, Headman Steady Hlabiso, Councillor Matayi, and Chief Peter Ngorima with the message that: “the community wants to meet these leaders on 22 November and see the mining permits.” They were also ordered to remove their shaking tables from the river and suspend all mining operations until this meeting, where the community expects to verify documentation from the Ministry of Mines. During this confrontation, ancestral spirits from five different areas manifested, including the nzuzu (water spirit) and the mhondoro (territorial spirits). This same community had previously expelled another group of Chinese miners last year who also had no valid papers. On that day, a whirlwind appeared and lifted the vehicle belonging to Diamond FM, which had come to cover the story.

THIS morning l left the Mining Town of Phalaborwa in Limpopo Province of South Africa after 6 days of providing an essential & critical technical service… I learnt several things about how mining can be effectively transform the lives of communities living adjacent to the mines. In Phalaborwa there is Foskor Mine & Phalaborwa Mining Company which employ thousands of people directly & indirectly… Here are a few things they do right: 1. For highly technical positions like Engineering & Artisans, & Managerial Posts, the companies are allowed to advertise & hire anyone from anywhere. 2. For general work & other positions that do not require special skills, there is a Community Forum responsible for selecting employees who get hired by the mines. These employees are taken from the townships & villages around. 3. The companies provide Learnerships to people from the surrounding communities selected by the Community Forum…. The beneficiaries of these learnerships get employed at the mining companies or they can use the skills elsewhere. So the companies are helping to skill the locals. 4. The PCF (Phalaborwa Community Forum) is a POWERFUL Group that ensures that the interests of the community are prioritised. The group can mobilise protests that disrupt mining operations IF they feel that the companies are neglecting the community. It is the PCF that approaches the mining companies with requests for funding community infrastructure like schools, clinics, & roads. 5. The Phalaborwa Mining Company (PMC) is now controlled by Chinese Investors and the only reputation they have is PAYING GOOD SALARIES… I never heard anyone speaking badly against the Chinese Investors. Despite the Great Works of the Community Forum, there are other people in Phalaborwa who feel that the Community Forum is led by corrupt people who ask for bribes to guarantee employment at the mines…. That said, the Community Forum remains an effective tool for safeguarding the interests of the community. I think President President of Zimbabwe’s govt can adopt a similar approach. Instead of leaving Cashvists like Farai Maguwu to go around harassing Mining Investors, Community Forums can be formed. The Members can include MPs, Councillors, Chiefs, Headmen, Opposition Politicians, Civil Servants in the area, & Ordinary Citizens….. The Community Forum will act as the bridge between the Community & the Mining Companies. Jamwanda

INSIDE OYO NATIONAL PARK: HOW ILLEGAL MINING HAS TURNED A PROTECTED FOREST INTO A LAWLESS COMMUNITY. As some of you might recall, i did a light report about illegal mining carried out in Old Oyo National Park which is linked to Kwara State as well in 2023. After the report which, I remembered reaching out to Ministry of Mining, a taskforce was established to curtail the activities of the miners, it worked effectively especially at the Oyo state side but it wasn't working effectively in Kwara state. After the killings of 5 National Park personnel by bandits last week, which I broke the news, I carried out an investigation to see the level of compliance at the Old Oyo National Park where lithium mining activity is going, then i discovered the said mining has become a full blown community. The current number of illegal miners operating at Old Oyo National Park is estimated to be between 200,000 and 400,000, including individuals involved in buying and selling activities at the site. According to my research , there is nothing sold outside the illegal mining site that is not also sold within the site. Items sold include foodstuffs, soft drinks, alcoholic beverages, and various forms of hard drugs. There is also the presence of sex workers who render their services to illegal miners inside grass huts constructed within the area. Additionally, medical drugs and medical items such as needles, injections, and intravenous fluids are openly sold at the site. Explosives are also sold to illegal miners and are used for blasting lithium during excavation. There are thousands of blacksmiths on site who fabricate various tools used for illegal mining activities, including shovels, diggers, chisels, and hammers. There is a high rate of child labour at the illegal mining site, also known as Daba. These children are used mainly for sorting lithium from rocks. The illegal mining site is divided into two sections: the Yoruba illegal mining section and the Hausa/Fulani illegal mining section. Both sections are located within Old Oyo National Park. The road leading to the illegal mining site (Daba) is not motorable. Access to the site is only possible by motorcycle. All extracted lithium is transported by motorcycles to Bonni, Igbeti, or Soro in Kishi. This indicates that illegal miners access the mining site through Igbeti, Kishi, and Bonni. As at the time of writing this report, many empty trucks are observed entering through Igbeti, Oyo State, heading directly to Bonni, and passing through Bonni to Jeba Oloru, Kwara State, from where the lithium is transported to destinations of their choice. They operate within the confines of laws established by the illegal miners’ chairman, popularly known as “CD.” Anyone who commits the crime of stealing is punished by death. The area is so enclosed that outsiders can be fished out by them. A bike man who carries lithium from the forest to the truck earns ₦12,000 per bag. One bag of lithium weighs 100kg, and they carry two bags, making 200kg. The miners are so familiar with the area that they can easily move to Igbeti, Kishi, and Bonni in Kwara State from the forest while evading security forces without being noticed, because many of them have been living in the forest for more than three years without seeing the outside world. It is imperative that both the Kwara State Government, Oyo State Government, and the Federal Government get hold of this before it becomes a security problem for the whole country. Illegal mining in Old Oyo National Park is progressing, not regressing.

INSIDE OYO NATIONAL PARK: HOW ILLEGAL MINING HAS TURNED A PROTECTED FOREST INTO A LAWLESS COMMUNITY. As some of you might recall, i did a light report about illegal mining carried out in Old Oyo National Park which is linked to Kwara State as well in 2023. After the report which, I remembered reaching out to Ministry of Mining, a taskforce was established to curtail the activities of the miners, it worked effectively especially at the Oyo state side but it wasn't working effectively in Kwara state. After the killings of 5 National Park personnel by bandits last week, which I broke the news, I carried out an investigation to see the level of compliance at the Old Oyo National Park where lithium mining activity is going, then i discovered the said mining has become a full blown community. The current number of illegal miners operating at Old Oyo National Park is estimated to be between 200,000 and 400,000, including individuals involved in buying and selling activities at the site. According to my research , there is nothing sold outside the illegal mining site that is not also sold within the site. Items sold include foodstuffs, soft drinks, alcoholic beverages, and various forms of hard drugs. There is also the presence of sex workers who render their services to illegal miners inside grass huts constructed within the area. Additionally, medical drugs and medical items such as needles, injections, and intravenous fluids are openly sold at the site. Explosives are also sold to illegal miners and are used for blasting lithium during excavation. There are thousands of blacksmiths on site who fabricate various tools used for illegal mining activities, including shovels, diggers, chisels, and hammers.
