Last week, we lowered the close to 2,100,000-pound Basemat into place — the foundation for the G7's first Small Modular Reactor and Canada's first new nuclear build in more than 30 years. One of the largest crawler cranes in the world lowered the Basemat module into the reactor shaft at the Darlington New Nuclear Project site — 35 metres below ground. It’s the first time in Canada a foundation for a reactor building was assembled modularly – putting the “M” in SMR – as the giant component was fabricated, welded, and put together in one piece before being lifted into place. This was a milestone months in the making, requiring significant attention to detail and safety, as well as the hard work of dedicated trades and project partners. Sodium Reactor Nuclear Reactor By Atomics International: The SNAP-10A Program This once highly classified film from 1959 is now available. Researches in China have discovered old forgotten research and films like this to build Sodium reactors once again with apparent great success. Later on the SNAP-10A nuclear reactor was launched into space in 1965. The Systems Nuclear Auxiliary Power Program (SNAP) reactor was developed under the SNAPSHOT program overseen by the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission. Atomics International, then a division of North American Aviation was the prime contractor for the SNAP-10A development. Most of the systems development and reactor testing was conducted at the Santa Susana Field Laboratory, Ventura County, California using a number of specialized facilities. The company also developed and tested other compact nuclear reactors including the SNAP Experimental Reactor (SER), SNAP-2, SNAP-8 Developmental Reactor (SNAP8-DR) and SNAP-8 Experimental Reactor (SNAP-8ER). All quite advanced and all all but forgotten. I remember them for us and AI. Last May, Valar Atomics promised to build a nuclear reactor and bring it online by July 4, 2026. Yesterday, their reactor went online in Utah — three days before the deadline set by Trump’s executive order to accelerate advanced nuclear testing outside the national labs. We went critical twice.” “And we went to thermal power operations and we went to electricity production.” "We really just hit it out of the park in every dimension." What if the logic at the core of the SMR paradigm is faulty? One of the key promises of SMRs is to move a greater percentage of work from the unproductive construction site to a productive factory environment... but what if large modular reactors do a better job of that? Module construction for the nuclear steam supply system and balance of plant containing key components, HVAC, electrical, plumbing etc... can be moved to the factory environment in small or large modular reactors like AP1000, ABWR or the most recent CANDUs. Civil works and site preparation cannot. The problem with grid scale SMRs like BWRX-300 & AP300 etc... is that the civil works and site preparation don't scale down proportionately with the decreased reactor output. The nuclear steam supply system and turbine island is typically only 25-35% of the overnight construction cost of a nuclear plant. The civil works, site preparation, installation work dominate overnight cost. Therefore with grid scale SMRs ~300MWe you actually end up with a greater proportion of work per MWe being on the unproductive construction site compared to a large modular reactor defeating the premise and promise of SMR productivity gains.

“I would call Westinghouse Electric Company an American Company. It’s a legacy American company… it has a Canadian partner in Cameco Corporation but it’s an American company.” United States Secretary of Energy Chris Wright. He went on to say. "This is a plan to partner across the country to build a large amount of power…and to do so in a way that’s efficient…to re-stand up the supply chain IN THE UNITED STATES.” It doesn’t get any clearer than this. It’s time that Canadian policymakers like Timothy Hodgson wake up to the reality that building Westinghouse reactors in Canada will sacrifice huge economic benefits, and make us dependent on an increasingly unreliable and even hostile partner. The policy with the clear return on investment for what will be some of Canada’s largest capital projects of the 21st-century is clear. Investing in CANDU, our national reactor technology, locks in energy sovereignty, and 100 years of high productivity value add jobs in engineering services, component replacement and fuel fabrication, jobs that are nearly all based in the United States in the case of U.S. headquartered Westinghouse AP1000 reactors. We should not be making 100 year 50-100 billion dollar bets on U.S. generosity and goodwill. We have every indication that there is a strong "America First" tendency firmly rooted in the American body politic that will continue to rear its ugly head long after the Trump presidency has passed. Now that the USA has made the decision to invest 80 billion into Westinghouse projects south of the border in exchange for a future 20% stake in the company we can suffer no illusions about any false equivalency between Westinghouse and CANDU as Canadian champions. In 1980 Canada had 13 large CANDU reactors under simultaneous construction in 3 different countries around the world. These reactors have gone on to be the 3rd most widely deployed reactor technnology in the world alongside the American Pressurized and Boiling Water Reactor and have been amongst the top performers in the global fleet. In the aftermath of the collapse of Canadian telecoms giants and aviation aspirations its time to drop the inferioriy complex and lean into one of Canada's last bastions of high productivity, value add Canadian intellectual property and jobs. We have every incentive to do so.

We’ve gone critical. At 12:20 am on July 4th, Aalo sustained a controlled fission chain reaction for the first time. We have officially surpassed the goal of President Trump’s Executive Order 14301, achieving 4 advanced nuclear reactor criticalities by America’s 250th birthday. This is a zero-power criticality to validate our supply chain, reactor physics and control systems for our 10 MWe full-powered reactor, the Aalo-X, targeting power operations next year. Everything was built at full scale: fuel, moderator, control systems, etc., so we understand system performance at its commercial scope. That also meant tackling four of the most difficult things in nuclear with this criticality milestone: ✅ Ground-up construction of our reactor facility ✅ Manufacturing the reactor in our factory and shipping them by road ✅ Assembling our own fuel assemblies using commercial UO2 ✅ Standing up training, safety, and operational programs to become our own nuclear operator I am proud to say we have accomplished all four goals, along with achieving criticality. The reactor building was constructed in 36 days and construction to criticality was achieved in under 8 months. That’s the fastest nuclear build in the last 80 years. A massive congratulations to the Aalo Atomics team and our partners. Many thanks to Idaho National Laboratory, the DOE-Idaho Operations Office, and the Office of Nuclear Energy for their immense support in enabling this milestone and dedicated to the American nuclear resurgence.

Building nuclear reactors that are easy to replicate is a SpaceX style problem: "What we're trying to do here is build a reactor which is easy to replicate. It's a little different from mass manufacturing. Different from a Tesla style problem, more like a SpaceX style problem. You have a complicated vehicle that you need to get really good at building and deploying in a repeatable fashion. When I first started the company, we didn't have a size in mind for the first reactor. It was very explicit. We told the team we don't know how big the reactor is going to be. We don't know how powerful it's going to be. We didn't know those numbers until a year to 18 months into the company. We told ourselves we are going to discover the power level through the manufacturing process. Our instinct was as long as that number turns out to be somewhere above 15 megawatts, we should be pretty good for mass production. If you're under 15 megawatts, it's pretty hard to scale the right way. You just end up doing so many different pieces of operations that it becomes more complicated. But our feeling is above the 15 megawatt break point, you have something that can really scale. And we think this reactor ends up somewhere around 25 megawatts. 25 megawatts being the sort of scale factor where if you want a gigawatt, you just build 40 of them. The next challenge for us as we turn this on and turn the next one on is how do we get to the place where we're turning on one reactor every day and then multiple reactors every day. That's how we're going to climb into the gigawatts."

The Department of Energy has formally approved our Preliminary Documented Safety Analysis (PDSA) for the Mark-0 reactor—our first demonstration reactor, scheduled to go live before July 4, 2026. Mark-0 will validate fueling operations, reactor controls, and core physics. This demonstration is a critical step toward generating electricity from advanced microreactors. Mark-0 uses a full-scale core and the same facility and fuel that will support our next reactor test in 2027. The PDSA defines the preliminary safety basis for the reactor, facility, and planned operations, demonstrating that our approach meets DOE expectations at this stage. This approval validates our safety case and establishes a clear pathway to final acceptance as we prepare for fabrication, assembly, and installation. Mark-0 will be tested at Idaho National Laboratory in Building 793—now the Reactors and Critical Experiments facility—a site with deep nuclear history. Decades ago, this building housed ML-1, the Army’s first mobile nuclear reactor. Today, it supports the next generation of deployable nuclear power. We find the historical relevance fitting and inspiring, as Antares develops a similar-scale microreactor to meet Army operational and installation needs. Since 2024, we’ve worked to establish this facility as an enduring testbed, enabling rapid progress without the need for groundbreaking construction. We’re grateful for our partners at DOE and INL, and for leaders like Congressman Mike Simpson who continue to support the American nuclear renaissance.
