📸 🕊️ Rudolf Hess's Flight For Peace On 10 May 1941, Rudolf Hess, the Third Reich’s second man, crash lands in Scotland on a peace mission to Britain. He had been at the side of Adolf Hitler since the very beginning of the NSDAP. Hess was there during the Beerhall Putsch and served his time in prison alongside Hitler. Since the fall of France, Hess has been working on a secret peace mission to Britain on his own authority. The target of the mission was the Duke of Hamilton, who Hess met during the Berlin Olympics of 1936 and believed to be in favor of peace. Hess aims to reach King George through him and remove Winston Churchill from office after which peace can be made. He does this with the conviction that war with Britain is a ‘European civil war’. However, Hess runs out of fuel a mere 12 miles (19 km) from the Duke’s residence and is forced to bail out of his aircraft, after which he is captured by a local farmer upon landing and escorted to the police station.
