The UK (roughly 50–60°N) on a standard Mercator map it appears roughly two to three times larger than its actual relative size compared with places nearer the equator.

Most maps lie about the true scale because it's a sphere flattened out. UK is ~310miles wide and Africa is ~4600miles wide. So the UK is visually much larger than reality. You can cycle the narrowest point of England E to W in a [long] day.
