The UK still has one of the most capable navies in Europe. When tensions were clearly rising, why were we not pre-positioning assets in the region as we have done in the past? The answer appears to lie in the government’s economic mismanagement. Our armed forces are reportedly being told to find around £2.6 billion in savings before the end of the financial year. When you impose cuts like that, operational readiness inevitably suffers. Ships remain in port. Exercises are reduced. Assets are not deployed. Meanwhile, this government can find money for higher taxes and new spending commitments, yet when it comes to defence, the one responsibility that underpins all others, we are told there is no money. Defence cannot be an afterthought. Britain must once again act with the seriousness the moment demands.

I asked a simple question in the House today: freedom of navigation through one of the world’s most critical energy routes matters to Britain, to our allies, and to global stability. The question now is simple: will we act, within international law, to defend it if necessary? There seems to be some confusion on the Labour Government backbenches that somehow the Government has kept Britain out of this war. The truth is we are not out of it. Our bases are already in the firing line. Our allies are already in the firing line. Britain cannot pretend we are somehow separate from the risks that come with defending international security. When the Chancellor earlier today spoke about the importance of the Straits of Hormuz, and the necessity of taking action where appropriate, does that mean the UK will, and under international law can, take action if Iranian threats against tankers and shipping in the Straits of Hormuz continue?
